Entries Open for 2008 Quiksilver Goodwave presented by Virgin Mobile in association with Resolution
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 January, 2008 : - - 1 January saw the entries for the 2008 Quiksilver Goodwave open up online. Surfers who want to compete in this the most popular event in the country, need to register during the month of January on goodwave.co.za in order to be in the selection. The 32 invited surfers and alternates will be announced on February 1 when the 11-month waiting period gets underway.
With R100,000 total prize money, a massive R75,000 first prize and R1 entry fee, surfers from around the country will be clicking away at the ‘enter’ button on the website to ensure that they are in the running for one of the coveted slots. Contestants are selected on two basic criteria: their past results and their performance ability in firing waves, especially at the New Pier.
Entry is open to all, from the hard-core New Pier locals who know the wave like the back of their hands, to all the up-and-coming junior surfers from around the country. Previous winners include Llewellyn Whittaker, Simon Nicholson, Warwick Wright and Antonio Bortoletto, and they’ll all be hoping to go the double. It’s four heats in total of good barrels, at one of the best waves in the country, to win the most popular and prestigious event on the local calendar. Jet-ski’s will be utilised in the event as well, with competitors being towed back into the lineup after each wave, thus conserving energy for their task at hand – surfing the perfect waves of New Pier to the best of their abilities. The event format will consist of four-man heats of thirty minutes, top two waves counting. South Africa’s top judges, following international criteria and standards, will decide the winner.
The event isn’t always a go, and it didn’t run in 2006 as there wasn’t the ideal day for competition. The combination of wind, tide, swell, and sandbank formation all need to come together to make the ‘magic day,’ and Quiksilver are confident that such a day will happen in 2008. Last year’s winner Antonio Bortoletto is amping for this event.
“It really is such a cool event and obviously one of my favourites,” said Bortoletto. “I am going to be competing overseas in the beginning of the year, so I hope the Goodwave doesn’t go too early. There is always a fear that the event is going to run while we’re away competing, but either way I just hope I look out my window one morning and find it on!”
It has been a fairly sporadic summer season in Durban so far, but the much-heralded cyclones are just around the corner. With the help of renowned surf forecaster Steve Pike, Quiksilver is able to track the swells and winds and get a very good indication of when the event will run. To be in the loop sign up for mobile and email alerts on the Goodwave website.
To find out who the elite 32 surfers are, log onto the event website on goodwave.co.za on the first of February 2008. To be notified on the event status, follow the links on the webpage to register for updates. There will also be a daily surf report starting in February, so you can check out what’s going down at the New Pier every morning.
