2008 Jamaican surf team faces big financial squeeze

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 April, 2008 : - - Jamaica’s Junior Surfing Team, scheduled to take part in the 2008 ISA/Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championships (WJSC) in Hossegor France from May 21 to June 1 2008, has run into financial difficulties.

“This financial year has been a tough one” said JSA President Billy Wilmot. “Since last April we have sent national teams to the WJSC in Portugal, The Pan American Surfing Association Games (PASAG) in Chile and the World Masters Surfing Championships in Peru. The resulting financial strain on the association has been tremendous.”

The JSA now needs approximately three million dollars in order to send a complete team of 12 athletes and 3 management personnel to the event. “With the short time remaining until the games we have decided to only send our top 2 juniors, Shane Simmonds and Ackeam Phillips with team Coach Luke Williams and Team Manager Norman Williams, and even with this reduced team we still are short on funding!” said Mr. Wilmot.

The JSA receives a small annual grant from the Sports Development Foundation. Most of their funding however, comes from main sponsors “Insight”, “Quashi”, “Body Glove”, “Copa”, “Margarittaville” along with a few intermittent donations from other private sources.

Mr. Wilmot continued “We are very disappointed that we will not be sending a full team but the deadlines are so quickly approaching and with our sponsorship requests not having yielded any returns, it seems we must face the facts. In order to send the 4 member delegation we still need to find another J$300,000.00 of the required J$900,000.00”.
