JA’s PHILLIPS and BAJAN ST JOHN WIN SAN SUCI PRO SURF CONTEST

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 November, 2009 : - - Jamaican Junior Pro surfer Ackeam Phillips walked away with the top spot at the 2009 Suzuki San Suci Pro surf contest on Sunday November 11th 2009 in San Suci Trinidad. The young Jamaican outclassed all 14 opponents in the tiny waves and won the under 21 division and a free ticket to Barbados for the final stop on the Caribbean Surf Network’s Caribbean Cup Pro Tour at the end of November.

“All of Jamaica’s 4 entrants in the under 21 division finished in the top 6. Ackeam won, Eneson Lightbourn finished in 3rd, Shane Simmonds in 5th and Michael Panton finished 6th. This proves that the work the JSA has been doing through our Youth Development Program is paying off…” said JSA President Billy Wilmot. “… Our juniors dominated the event.”

Despite very small waves, Jamaica had a strong showing in the open division as well. Icah Wilmot and Luke Williams made the finals and took 3rd and 4th place finishes. Inilek Wilmot and Jason Pusey made the top 10 finishing in 7th and 9th respectively.

Lewis St John of Barbados won the open division in a nail biting final which was conducted in twilight conditions at the very end of the day. The lead changed hands on every ride as Chris Dennis of Trinidad and the Jamaican Duo of Icah Wilmot and Luke Williams battled with the Bajan St John for the few ride-able waves coming in. Spectators on the beach turned on their car headlights out to sea to help the surfers see the incoming waves.

With St John’s previous win at the Makka Pro earlier this year, he has secured the 3 event series title with a contest in hand. Now the race is on for second place with the final event of the series set for the end of November.
