Sea Slug Championships windup at Zuma

On Saturday January 11th at Zuma Beach the Volcom Sea Slug huddled up for the final double rated event. The surf was a fun glassy 3-4 feet in the morning and became bumpy close-outs in the mid day and returned to glassy waves for the finals. With super valuable points toward the invites for the Crusty Championships the day kicked off with the Juniors.

In the Juniors division the top four in the ranking held tight and dominated the first round. The juniors were up to the challenage and both Bummy and Shaggy were going for it. Bummy had the edge early on sitting to the side but in the final it came down to Colin Dodgson letting lose and securing his win as well as the overall season. Rounding out the final were Bummy, Tim Pffanestiel, Cory Arrambide, Matt Mayer and Nick Rozsa in that order.

The groms division saw a few new faces that made an impact on the day. Reed Farrer showed up super late and just squeeked into the even and made it to the final. Joey Mungo drove up from Huntington and surfed solid all day long. His main competition was another out of towner, Timmy Pffanestiel and they combined for a one two punch in the end. The final was close but with a one point advantage Joey took the win. He was followed by Timmy Pffanestiel, Nick Rozsa, Cory Arrambide, Tyler Molesworth and Reed Farrer.

What can be said about the division that always puts on a great show? The Pro-Am made the waves look good all day long. With a stacked final of guys like Blake Howard, Nate Tyler, Shaun Burrell, Yves Bright, Rusty White, and Nick Rozsa any one could have won. The difference between 1st and 5th was 2.5 points. But in the end it comes down to who makes that one sick wave and that was once again, Nate Tyler. The deal was sealed with a solid frontside air that was the cleanest of the day and scored an 8.

Thanks to all the contributing sponsors for helping make this another great year: Smith, Globe, Bully´s Leashes, Freestyle Watches, Body Glove, Red Bull, AST, Santa Cruz Skateboards Barker Surfboards, Mt. High, K2 snowboards, Becker Surf & Val Surf shops, Vita Water, Cliff Bar, Famous Wax, Future Fins, my pop for taking pictures, and Surfing, Surfer & Transworld Magazines.
