Donald’s family and team of board builders at Hawaiian Pro Designs would like to thank everyone for the tremendous outpouring of love and support for one of surfing's greatest surfer/shapers in history.

The legendary shaper and longboarder was born in Waikiki and started shaping at 8 years old and at 12 years old saved up enough money to fly to California to work for Dale Velzy shaping for the summer. At 15 he moved to California to shape full time.

In 1985 he was recognized by Surfer magazine as one of the 25 surfers who most changed the face of the sport. In the same year, he was arrested along with other 65 people in a large cocaine trafficking scheme.

After 39 days in a Federal minimum security facility in Lompoc, California, Takayama was again shaping and in 1991 reached the International Surfing Hall of Fame.

Takayama, a goofy-footer, was also a competitive pro surfer. He was at the top three times (64, 65 and 67) and runner up in the U.S. Championships in 1966 and 67. In later years, he devoted himself to his brand, Hawaiian Pro Designs.

He is survived by his wife Sydney Diane Takayama. and three daughters.
