Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 October, 2012 : - - A wide angle view of Shane Dorian's epic bomb at Jaws, Maui, on October 9, 2012, shot by Elliot Leboe. Dorian, a multi-time XXL winner, was stoked to find the pathway through a massive Jaws barrel. "I just sorta found myself in the sweet spot," he said. "Once I got over that boil I just had to hang on. Pucker factor was a 10!." resulting in an entry in the Ride of the Year category of the 2013 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.
The winter big wave surfing season struck the North Pacific in ferocious fashion with a spectacular opening day of waves at Jaws, Maui. The swell, generated by the remnants of Typhoon Maliksi, hit the Hawaiian chain October 8 and remained solid through the next day, resulting in a flood of entries into the 2013 Billabong XXL Awards.
Glassy conditions made for an incredible paddle session. Surfers were calling it one of the best days in the history of Big Wave surfing. The swell lasted into the next day before dropping and made for another historic paddle day. Guys were riding waves just going straight, and were successfully completing waves and even getting barreled. With incredible rides going down, there was plenty of punishment going around.
Keala Kennelly also paddled in and gets a legit backside barrel at Jaws on October 9, 2012. Video by Elliot Leboe. An entry in the Billabong Girls Best Performance category of the 2013 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.
