Shark charged twice as wife waited at shore

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 May, 2013 : - - The 36-year-old man was surfing off Reunion Island when a shark charged at him twice, prompting a nearby swimmer to raise the alert when he saw blood on the water.

The surfer's wife was on the beach at the time of the attack, which caused significant blood loss and put him into cardiac and respiratory arrest, and she is being treated for shock following her husband's death.

French media identified the couple as coming from Morteau, in eastern France.The deadly shark attack was the first this year on the French island, which has a history of similar incidents.

Three people have been killed by sharks in the past two years and another attack causing serious injury happened last summer. The beach where the latest attack occurred has reportedly been re-opened. Authorities have banned swimming and other water activities until further notice.
