Race For Gold Heats Up As First Athletes Are Eliminated
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 October, 2013 : - - Amazing Bodyboarding continued on Day 2 of the ISA World Bodyboad Championship (WBC) in Venezuela. The waves were in the 2-3feet range, and maintaining ideal conditions, allowing the world’s best bodyboarders to perform at their best, while putting on a great show.
Day 2 began with Open Men’s Bodyboard Qualify Round 1, Qualify Round 2 of Open Women’s, Dropknee and Junior U-18 Boys, followed by Qualify Round 1 of Junior U-18 Girls, and finally with Repechage Rounds 1 and 2 of the Open Men’s. These two last Rounds of the day were do or die round; if a bodyboarder finished in 3rd or 4th position, it meant the end of competition.
Argentina and Dominican Republic lost their first competitors early this morning. However another bodyboarder from Argentina, Patricio Garay caused the upset of the Repechage Round, earning a total heat score of 13.52, in what was expected to be a tough heat against Ecuador’s Jorge Pulmon, who advanced in second position.
In Open Women’s, Brazil’s Neymara Carvalho once again showed her true potential by earning first place in her heat, with a total score of 12.37, defeating Puerto Rico’s Luz Marie “Loly” Grande, who earned 12.00 points.
Today’s best performers in the Junior U-18 Boys were Brazil’s Marcyus Thompson and Luis Briceño from Venezuela. Both young competitors put on a great show for the spectators on the beach, and by the end of the heat, the Venezuelan, Briceño, advanced to the next round in the first position with a score of 14.83 points.
One of the highest scoring and most exciting heats of the day was in the Open Men’s, where the defending Gold Medalist, Eder Luciano (BRA), earning an impressive 15.50 points, defeating the local Venezuelan Enyer Moncada (12.73) and Morocco’s Brahim Iddouch (9.00).

In Dropknee, Venezuelan Luis Rodriguez was the stand out in the division, earning a total heat score of 12.34, easily defeating his opponents, and making him one of the favorites for the Individual Gold Medal in this category. In the Junior U-18 Girls, Glorielys Oropeza (VEN) had a dominant performance in her first international competition, earning a total heat score of 11.83, showing her great skill level, and defeating Catalina Hernandez (CHI, 6.40).
Day 2 concluded with Round 2 of the Open Men’s Repechage, with the overall highest scoring heat of the day, in which two Venezuelan locals advanced to the next heat in this do-or-die round. Sergio Alonzo and Leoylan Montesinos managed to post impressive scores by executing clean and critical maneuvers that awarded them a total heat score of 15.53 and 15.16 respectively, sending home Marlon Sandoval (CRI, 11.23) and Patricio Galay (ARG, 8.94).
On Tuesday, the Athletes will once again fight for the Team and Individual Gold Medals in beautiful Margarita Island, starting at 9am (local Venezuela time) with the live webcast.
