Final match-ups sure to be exciting at Be the Influence SUP & Paddleboard
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 November, 2013 - A heavyweight battle between Australia’s best SUP surfers is promised when the Be the Influence Australian SUP and Paddleboard Titles holds the surfing finals at Currumbin tomorrow morning.
The four-day event started today with a clean half-metre swell in the morning before a north-easterly wind made conditions challenging through the afternoon.
More than 200 of the country’s best paddlers are representing their States in the event. The SUP events will be held across three disciplines: surfing; Technical Race between 4-8km of several laps in and out through the surf; and a 15-20km Marathon. The paddleboard titles will be held in two disciplines; Technical Race between 4-8km of several laps in and out through the surf; and a 15-20km Marathon.
SUP surfing will finish tomorrow at Currumbin before the Technical Races in both SUP and prone paddleboarding on Saturday. The marathon in both disciplines will be held on the Sunday.
The Open Men made the most of the early morning clean conditions with Justin Holland (NSW), Harry Muskall (NSW), Geoff Breen (QLD), Matt Takle (VIC), Jake and Rick Jakovich (WA), Kai Bates (NSW) and Jackson Close (QLD) dominating in the morning.
The 14-year-old Muskall, in particular, impressed defeating defending Australian champion Beau Nixon in their early heat to start the day. The Open Men completed their quarter-finals and the semi-finals will include Holland, Nixon, Muskall and Breen in one heat with Close, Rick Jakovich, Bates and Toby Cracknell (NSW) contesting the other.
In the Open Women’s Terrene Black (NSW) and Shakira Westdorp (QLD) were the early frontrunners and expected to carry their form over to the morning to contest the semi-final and final.
