Shortboard champs crowned at Tradies Surfmasters
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 November, 2013 - Cronulla - Day one of the 2013 Tradies Surfmasters kicked off in difficult one-to-two foot waves at North Cronulla today, with some of surfing’s elder statesmen trading blows across a variety of shortboard divisions.
Local surfer Glenn Pringle set the precedent early in the day locking in an impressive 8.67 ride in his opening Over-40 Shortboard heat. The fluent natural-footer successfully negotiated the bumpy lineup to take a clean sweep of wins across all his heats - round one, semis and final. Despite putting in a valiant effort through all rounds, Maroubra’s Paul Moffatt had to settle for the runner-up spot behind the local surfer.
Wayne Roach successfully netted himself a win in the Over-60 Men Shortboard final. The natural-footer threw down a series of drawn out roundhouse cutbacks, which was awarded with 11.47 heat total (out of a possible 20).
Mark Dewhurst, George Watt and Lloyd Suttor finished in second, third and fourth respectively.
Roach was able to back up his Over-60s win with a runner-up finish in the Over-55 Men. Roach was forced to settle for second when in-form local surfer Lance Woolfenden charged his way to victory in the highly competitive division.
Local surfer Phil Carey claimed the win in the Over-50s final successfully disposing of Andrew Johnson, Mark Gobbe and Richard Sargeson who finished in second, third and fourth respectively. Carey executed a chain of critical forehand hooks and turns to claim the win.
Brett Daintry notched up another win for the local contingent, taking out the Over-45 final. The ultra fast natural-footer performed a chain of powerful carves and snaps to claim the title with a two-wave total of 10.67.
In the Single Fin/Retro division, Collaroy Plateau’s Carl Musker successfully took the win ahead of Jamie Doran, Barry Drewitt, John Mandybur and Mick Duprez. The natural-footed surfer drew out multiple long carves to take out the title.
On land, the Red, White and Blues Festival saw food and wine stalls, nostalgic cars, swimwear parades and live music stages fill Dunningham Park, directly behind the competition area.
Competition is expected to kick off at 7.30 am tomorrow at North Cronulla with all remaining divisions – SUP, Kneeboard and Longboard. The Event Hotline will be updated with a complete schedule by 6.45am on the day of competition. Call 0458 247 212 for the most up-to-date information.
