Juniors to battle it out at Soundwave Titles supported by Be The Influence
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 November, 2013 - Kiama is preparing for an invasion of junior surfers when the Soundwave Australian Junior Surfing Titles start next week.
More than 200 of Australia’s best junior surfers will be heading to Kiama in southern NSW for what is regarded as the pinnacle of junior surfing in Australia from 30th November-7th December.
Six states will be represented in the battle for the prestigious national titles in Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18, while school surfing will also make up a significant part of the event with competitors also chasing the Australian School Surfing Association Titles.
Surfing NSW Judge and South Coast Regional Director Wayne Pack said the local community was excited by the impending arrival of the huge contingent of junior surfers.
“It's been some time since we've seen such a prestigious event in the region and we think the waves are perfectly suited to the high performance surfing we expect from junior surfers who are competing on a national level,” Pack said.
“The region has ideal locations for pretty much any type of weather condition and we hope to see the competitors in some of the best waves the Kiama region has to offer."
Kiama, 1.5 hours south of Sydney, is famous for attracting powerful swell and four beaches will be available to make the most of the conditions including Werri Beach, Surf Beach, Jones's Beach and Bombo Beach.
The opening ceremony will be held on 30th November and surfing will be held from 1st-7th December.
A win at the national level is regarded as a major step in a surfer’s competitive career with the list of past winners featuring some of the greatest names in world surfing including ASP Men’s World Champions Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning, fellow Gold Coasters Dean Morrison and Bede Durbidge, plus former World Champions Mark Richards, Tom Carroll and Damian Hardman.
Five-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, former World Champion Chelsea Hedges, and the current World No.2 and No.3 surfers Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons are also included on the prestigious honour roll.
