Coffs Harbour set for Billabong Oz Grom Cup

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 February, 2014 -- The future stars of Australian surfing have one more reason to look forward to school holidays with the addition of a prestigious new event to the junior calendar, the Billabong OZ Grom Cup presented by Kustom.

Beginning Easter Monday April 21st, the four-day U/18s event for male and female surfers will offer a whopping 11 divisions and be hosted in the best conditions the Coffs Harbour region has to offer.

The competition format will allow each contestant to surf twice before the highest placed surfers are seeded into a four-person heat format, emulating the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Qualifying Series draws.

With an entire generation of fledgling surf stars charging around Australia’s coasts it’s expected the Billabong Oz Grom Cup will attract a national field of around 200 eager contestants.

“Billabong is really excited to be backing this new event,” explains Scott Hargreaves, the company’s Australian Marketing Manager. “This is about grassroots surfing and providing a platform for the explosion of talent we’ve witnessed right round Australia in the past few years.”

"The Coffs Harbour region is ideal; the area is littered with north and south-facing breaks that cater for a variety of weather and surf conditions, plus the timing of the event allows for families and parents to attend during school holidays."

Two divisions, for the mini superstars-of-tomorrow aged 10 and under, are ‘parent assisted’. If the surf is big or they are still learning, the parents literally push their kids into waves.

It’s a format that has become a crowd favourite at other popular grommet events, such as Taj Burrow’s “Small Fries” held annually at Yallingup in West Australia.

Divisions include (male and female): the U/8’s Mixed (Parent assist), U/10 (Parent assist) Boys and Girls plus U/12, U/14, U/16, U/18 Boys and Girls. Prizes, food stalls and entertainment will be a part of the four-day tournament.

The Billabong OZ Grom presented by Kustom will be run in conjunction and the valued support of the Coffs Harbour Boardriders and sanctioned by Surfing NSW.
