The VQS Fish Finger Surf Series smells up New Zealand

VOLCOM STONE VQS CRUSTACEOUS TOUR
FISHFINGERS, NEW ZEALAND
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1ST
THE FISH FINGER SURF SERIES SMELLS UP NEW ZEALAND
Volcom Stone held its 4th event of the VQS Totally Crustaceous Tour in Raglan, New Zealand at Manu Bay on Saturday 1st November 2003. Manu Bay produced a fine day with 3 foot waves peeling down the left hand point.
A huge turn out of 70 competitors signed up to compete in the free event. As well the big number of competitors we had a good presence of our Volcom team there to competing the kids were happy to surf along side the Volcom team as well as our Australian team riders Zahn Foxton, Mitch Coleborn.
With the waves and the crowd improving throughout the day, the surfing was at a high standard with some high scores in all heats throughout the day.
The kids once again swarmed like bee´s on honey for there chance to get there hands on some free stuff, Groms were going crazy doing anything, jumping in the icy cold water of Manu bay and swimming down the point, Wheel barrow races, dancing competitions, as well as a Haka performance, kids walked away with DVS Shoes, Electric Sunglasses, Caps, Posters, Stickers, Peak Wetsuits, Nixon Watches, CD´s, Dvd´s and loads of Red Bull in there Bellies.
The finals arrived with some big names going down in the semi finals, Daniel Kereopa was unlucky at his local break, and Zahn Foxton also missed his chance at making the Pro Am final. Kiwi/International star Volcom team rider Jay Quinn dominated the final with solid back hand surfing to defeat an all star final. Volcom NZ team rider Luke Cederman put on a good show throughout the whole event placed 2nd, Justin Souter placed 3rd in front of Local surfer Micheal Banks.
The junior division was like the Pro Am division with loads of good surfing and some of NZ best junior talent. Volcom junior team rider from Australia Mitchel Coleborn took to the left point break with plenty of power surfing to prove to good in the final and taking out the junior final, young NZ ripper Luke Hughes placed 2nd ahead of well know junior local surfer Morehu Roberts 3rd, Volcom NZ team rider Chris Choppie O´leary placed 4th.
Groms division also ripped apart the left point waves, with Billy Stairmand taking the honors ahead of Tim O´Connor, 3rd Eli Jacobs and in 4th place Zak Smith.
The demand for a girls division was high with 10 girls competing, all girls surfed well with Kim Mayer proving to strong to take the final ahead of Jessie Santovik, 3rd place Kelly Clarkson and in 4th place Thandi Durham.
A great day had by all and look forward to seeing all finalists in Sydney, Australia on December 20 for the final Championships event, and look forward to seeing Manu Bay and everybody back there next year.
A big thank you our friends who helped make this event fun: Peak Wetsuits, Nixon Watches, Electric Sunglasses, DVS Shoes, Shock Records, Red Bull.
