VQS qualifiers emerge from the OC Starfish Surf Series
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 January 2004: - - The last starfish event for the season was held on January 24, 2004 at River Jetties, in Newport Beach. There was small wind swell waves with a cold ocean wind. The morning reminded us that there is a winter because it was damn cold. The staff was lucky to have the Doheny´s because they brought a heater to warm the judges. The competitors only had 125 burritos to keep them warm.
The Grom division has been the toughest throughout the whole season. It was the most crowded divsion again, but only six would make it to the finals. Eddie Elles was ripping and made it to the finals through the quarters. Logan Strook looked like he was going to win the event, but Bryan Doheny played the spoiler. Bryan was on fire and had the highest scoring 2 waves in the final to take home a Ride snowboard, a Ton of Prizes, and 2,000 points for the win.
Joey Mungo was the early favorite because he was destroying the junior division in the early rounds. It took Chase Newsom and newcomer Julian Kelly to bring Joey down. The seasons point leader Daniel Shea had a shocker and took fourth in the semifinal giving Chase a chance to pass him in the final ratings. Chase was surfing flawless through the final and took the first place trophy, consolidated skateboard, and other prizes home. Matt Taylor, Joey Head, and Asa Desmet rounded out the final.
The Pro-Am division was stacked with local talent like always. Adam Popp, the seasons point leader, had a hard semi which left him watching the final from the beach. Josh Hoyer was 10 points behind Adam and passed him with the advancment to the final. But in the final Brandon Guilmette took it to the other finalist and secured his spot in the VQS* Championship not to mention the 200 bucks as well. Josh Hoyer fought of Geoff Moysa and Jerry Burdine to win the season and take home an easy $50.
