NSSA SOUTHEAST NORTH EVENT #4 and #5
OPEN, EXPLORER DIVISIONS
FEBRUARY 14, 2004
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA
NSSA Southeast North event nos4 & 5 report and full results
After very harsh windy conditions and extreme cold weather, event #4 on January 10 had to be postponed and was continued to February 14. With a 7:00am start and hoping to get two contests in on the same day, the fog set in and did not want to leave. Wave conditions were chest high and the kids in the Open Juniors semi´s #1 & 2 where standing on deck ready to go. We finally got started at 8:10 with a long day ahead of us. All of the kids loyally returned from Puerto Rico, North and South Carolina, Virginia and all over the state of Florida to get contest #4 sewn up.
In the Open Juniors division Caleb Johnston and Wesley Toth went head to head with just a few points dividing them from 1st & 2nd place in the conference standings. They both showed why they made it to the NSSA Eastern Championships last year with Caleb taking the win over Wesley by a narrow 0.5 margin. The Explorer Boy´s victory went to Cody Thompson after a solid 6.0 score to finish off the final over Tyler Crawford who took second. The Explorer Juniors final was the battle between two time National Champion Jeremy Johnston and Puerto Rico´s mega talented Dylan Graves. With only three minutes left in the final, Jeremy needed one more wave to take the lead away from Dylan. He pulled it off with a unanimous perfect 10 score from the judges. It was deja vu for Jeremy and Dylan in the Open Men´s final as they went head to head again with Jeremy taking the victory by a slim and narrow 0.5.
The Mini Groms surfed their heats and the division was completed at the January 10th contest with little Nathan Colburn taking the big win over newcomer Andrew Stratus. Another one of our double winners for Contest #4 was in the Open Boys and Menehuene divisions with Nick Rupp pulling off twin victories in close battles with Evan Thompson. Gabby Escudero secured the win over Iron Man Jesse Heilman in the Explorer Men´s division.
Women´s surfer Sara Hoffert came out to clinch the win over Katie McLeod. Masters winner Chilly Willy took his third straight victory over Les Carrithers as well as Craig Colburn in the Seniors. Longboarder Tony Silvangi made a great showing on his longboard getting high scores from all judges with newcomer Matt Daley right on his heels. Contest #4 concluded at 10:15 on February 14 and now it was on to Contest #5!
Contest #5 starting time was at 10:15am with 35 more heats to go!
The event kicked off with Women´s semis and finished at 5:30 pm with the Explorer
Juniors. In the Women´s division, 2002 National Champion Karina Petroni pulled out another win over Kira Shepard. In the Mini Grom division, Evan Geiselman surfed his way to first place, killing every wave that he surfed on and getting high scores.
Evan came back in the Menehuene division and did the same thing to take that win.
Still on fire from his two morning triumphs, Nick Rupp came back later on in that day and scored another victory the Open Boy´s. In the Explorer Boys final Caleb Johnston was destroying waves and collected a high scoring 7.0 and 6.0 to seal the victory. In the Open Juniors, Cody Thompson continued his winning streak and it wasn´t easy having to battle back and froth with Eric Geiselman. Eric ripped the Explorer Juniors final posting two excellent wave scores of 8.0 and 7.0 to take the victory over Dylan Graves. As in Event #4, Jeremy Johnston continued his winning momentum in the Open Men´s division battling with Dylan and having it come down to the wire once again. After a runner-up finish in Event #4, Jesse Heilman came storming back to take a sweet victory in this one. It came as no surprise that Craig Colburn claimed the Seniors again as well as Chilly Willy in the Masters. Tony Silvagni dominated the Longboard division again, walking the nose and walking off a two-time winner for the weekend. The NSSA Southeast/North Conference would like to thank all of the surfers and our staff for a great contest and we will be back on February 21 to get contest #6 completed. Pray for surf!
