Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 June 2004: - - DELPERO, DELPERO, DELPERO, that’s how it read this weekend for the European leg of the international BIC Challenge at Lacanau. 17-year old Antoine DELPERO, originally from Marseille, now residing in Biarritz, France, looked strong right from the beginning until his last heat. Taking out the triple with the highest scoring single wave (9), best combined heat score (16.25) and 1st overall.
Interesting conditions persisted throughout the weekend. Commencing in clean 2-3 foot swell on well formed banks right in front of the Lacanau Surf Club, nice long rides were on offer for the two days, only slightly damned by patches of rain with welcome glances of sunshine.
A wide spread of European riders made it to Lacanau, although the English contingency were sadly missed with a BLU (British Longboard Union) event taking place over the same weekend. Young Dutch rider Michael Schmitz was the furthest from home and did himself proud through the morning of the Saturday’s surfing, winning his 1st heat, with nice long rides and carving traditional style turns.

In a changed format that gave all competitors a 2nd chance, the 2-day event consisted of 2 separate events with a points accumulation system that crowned the winner at the end of the 2nd day.
At the end of DAY 1 the top-4 places went to DELPERO, LARCHER, CARDONNET and MASSIERE (in that order) and if it was up to them they would have stopped the competition right there, but under the adjusted format, a format that would more accurately determine the best surfer of the weekend, the top-4 had to compete again the following day while the likes of Romain MAURIN and others, not in the top 4 were thankful for the format which gave them a 2nd chance the following day.
Stand outs for day 1 where clearly Antoine DELPERO with the Best Average Heats points (16.25) followed by Antoine CARDONNET (15.25).

The start of Day 2 saw a few early departures not for lack of contest ability but due to a superb night of partying organized by the Lacanau Surf Club. This included a BBQ, Martial Arts exhibition and music by DJ Manu.
Day Two was another day for DELPERO who continued his reign taking the top-2 Daily Best Wave Scores and top-3 Best Average Heat Points. The closest scoring surfer was Aurelein MEYNIEU who surfed with moments of brilliance through out the weekend but without the consistency to see him in the top-4 at the end of the weekend.
This year also included a girls division for the BiC Challenge, with the first place getter winning a 7’6” BiC Surfboard. Congrats to winner, Caroline ANGINANOL and thanks to all girls that took part. Hope to see you next year with a few more girls in the division.

Congratulations also go out to the top-4 men’s division winners who have won their place in the team to represent Europe in this years BIC Challenge Final in Costa Rica (October 15-25) against 3 other teams from the USA, Australia and Japan.
From Lacanau the BiC Challenge heads to Japan (July 10th) where a JPSA (Japan Pro Surfing Association) sanctioned event will select the team to represent Japan at the 2004 BIC Challenge final.

DELPERO!, DELPERO!, DELPERO!, Voilà le nom qui est revenu le plus de fois pendant ce week-end du défi international BIC Challenge a Lacanau.
Antoine DELPERO 17 ans, originaire de Marseille, résidant maintenant a Biarritz, a frappé fort du début jusqu´à la fin du week-end. C´est un triplé pour DELPERO avec la vague la mieux noté (9), les meilleurs points combinés dans un heat (16,25) et le 1er toute catégories dans cet événement de l´année.
De bonnes conditions pour le longboard ont persistées tout au long du week-end. Débutant dans un swell de 1m, 1m50 de vagues bien formées juste devant le Lacanau surf club, de longs rides ont été réalisés par les riders pendant ces deux jours, seulement légèrement perturbés par de petites périodes de pluie suivies de beaux rayons de soleil.

Une bonne partie des riders européens étaient présents à Lacanau, bien que les anglais aient été tristement manqués avec un contest ayant lieu le même week-end (British Longboard, Union).
Le jeune rider hollandais Michael Schmitz était le plus loin de chez lui et s´est fait remarqué le samedi matin , gagnant son premier heat, avec de longs rides sur les vagues de Lacanau et de très beau carving de type traditionnelle.
Dans un format particulier qui donnait à tous les concurrents une 2ème chance, l´événement de deux jours s´est composé de 2 événements séparés avec un système d´accumulation de points qui a couronné le gagnant à la fin du 2ème jour.
À la fin du 1er jour, les 4 premières places sont prises par DELPERO, LARCHER, CARDONNET et MASSIERE (dans cet ordre) et si cela ne tenait qu´à eux, ils auraient arrêté la compétition ici , mais sous le format ajusté, un format qui déterminerait plus exactement le meilleur surfer du week-end, le top-4 à du participer encore le jour suivant, ce qui donna un avantage a Romain MAURIN et quelques autres pas dans les 4 principaux, qui étaient reconnaissants pour le format qui leur a donné une 2ème chance le jour suivant.

Les meilleurs du premier jour étaient clairement Antoine DELPERO avec la meilleure moyenne des points de chaque heats pour le jour (16,25) suivi d´Antoine CARDONNET (15,25).
Le début du deuxième jour a vu quelques absents, pas par manque de capacités pour le contest mais en raison d´une superbe nuit de fête organisée organisée par le Lacanau Surf Club. Une soirée bien remplie en événements avec un BBQ, une démonstration de Pencak Silat (art martial Indonésien), et la bonne musique de DJ Manu pour rythmer la soirée.
Le deuxième jour était encore un autre jour pour DELPERO qui a continué "sa quête" prenant le top 2 de la plus belle vague du jour et le top-3 de la moyenne des points par heat. Le surfer qui a réussi à marquer le plus de points après DELPERO, c´est Aurelien MEYNIEU qui a surfé brillamment pendant le week end mais sans assez de régularité pour le voir dans le top-4 à la fin du week-end.

Cette année a également inclus une catégorie filles pour le Bic Challenge 2004, avec comme récompense pour l´heureuse gagnante une mini malibu 7’6 Bic Sport. Félicitations à Caroline ANGIBAUD et mercis à toutes les filles qui ont participé. On espère vous voir toutes l´année prochaine avec encore plus de filles dans la division.
Les félicitations vont également aux gagnants de division du top-4 chez les garçons qui ont gagné leurs places dans l´équipe pour représenter l´Europe dans cette finale du Bic Challenge qui aura lieu au Costa Rica (15 et 25 octobre ) contre 3 autres équipes des États-Unis, d´Australie et du Japon.
De Lacanau, le défi BIC se déplace au Japon (le 10 juillet) où un événement marquée de la JPSA (Japan Pro Surfing Association) choisira l´équipe qui représentera le Japon à la finale du défi Bic 2004.
