HIC/Faith Riding Classic serves up an ace on the Courts

HIC/Faith Riding Co. Serves Up a Classic on the Courts
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 June 2004: - - The second event on the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series took place this weekend as the Hawaiian Island Creation/Faith Riding Classic took over center stage at the Tennis Courts surf break at Ala Moana Beach Park. One hundred thirty-seven longboard competitors took to the lineup as as the new south swell squeaked across the equator and into the summer doldrums by mid Sunday morning, just in time for the Father’s Day finalists in nineteen divisions.
In the Shaka Pro division, point leader Bonga Perkins lost his chance to a commanding lead when in the semi finals, the low tide created equipment damage to the former world champion as he clipped off his main fin on his prized 9’0” thruster and finished last in the first semi heat.
As the tide rose and the Shaka Pro final being the last heat of the day, Kapono Nahina, Ben Kealoha, Keegan Edwards and Kekoa Uemura battled on the perfect rights which reeled through the thirty minute heat. Nahina started strong but lacked the long rides of the other three. Kealoha, the rookie making his first appearance in a pro final, caught seven waves but could only drum up a third. Edwards, from Honolulu, made the most of his nose riding skills and finished second as Uemura, who surfed out at the Tennis Courts break since a young teen, showed flawless nose riding skills, serving perfect long aces and took in the top prize and the $500.00 first place.
