Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 July 2004: - - The first QuiksilverEdition paddleboard race, with a trajectory linking Donostia - San Sebastian to Saint Jean de Luz, got to term Saturday afternoon with the victory of the mixed team CEFSSA 40 (Lifeguards Forming and Training Center). After 3 hours and 42 minutes of strenuous efforts, Lifeguards World Champion Stephanie Barneix and her fiancé Walter Geyer imposed their experience in this inaugural edition, with a distance from the last contestants of almost 2 hours. 21 teams in total went thru this physical and technical trajectory of 34 KM (17 nautical miles), a course as demanding for the body than for the mind, amidst the magical landscape of the Basque Country’s Bay of Biscay.
A CRUCIAL START AND A HIGHLY TECHNICAL COURSE
The start was given in Donostia - San Sebastian’s Bay of Concha at 10°clock
in the morning. The teams, assisted by a boat each, started the race
deploying a strong paddling and rapid rhythm, looking to secure positions
the best they could, even with the long hours of paddling in perspective.
Effectively, 4 hours of energy demanding efforts similar to a marathon like
effort, were lurking. Relaying each themselves on the 12 feet boards, each
contestant could, in this manner, alternate between sprint like efforts and
resting on the boats, thus finding a comfortable and efficient rhythm. The
different currents, rocky sea floors and the multiple difficulties conveyed
in the coastal navigation of this part of the Atlantic were crucial
parameters that the teams had to deal with during the race. From Stephanie
Barneix’s point-of-view, the most complicated part was certainly to not let
yourself and the board drift away and keep focus in order to not dissipate
your strength.
STEPHANIE BARNEIX: JUSTIFYING TITLES
A several time decorated swimmer of international titles (Australia 2000
WorldChamp of the 4x90 Meters competition), as well as a regular surfer,
this 29 years old “landaise” from Mont de Marsan became a specialist in
lifeguard disciplines. If the paddleboard was always meant a lifesaving
tool for Stephanie, paddling became a full on sport in which she fully
invested herself, taking advantage of her physical condition, her gliding
sense and her exceptional strength of mind.
6 times Champion of France as an ocean lifeguard, she also became World
Champion in that category.
Stephanie already participated solo in last year’s long distance paddleboard race from Molokai to Oahu, in Hawaii; 59 KM done in 7 hours which qualified her for this year’s race taking place on the 1st of August 2004. Stephanie and her future husband Walter Geyer (winner of the 2003 Molokai race in his category) enrolled in the team category, both wishing to bring back another title to an already complete pedigree.
A TIGHT RACE
Only four minutes separated the winning team to the second team of Saint
Jean de Luz natives Ludovic Duloup and Jonathan Desperges. Even though
determinated, the two experimented lifeguards were not able to surpass this
day’s winners. Their well deserved second place put them in front of Pena
Txuri, a Spanish Basque team composed with David Bustamente and Jaime
Fernandez.
Noting the great performance of the unique female team of Emmanuelle Joly and Rachel Lecoute. The Europe surf Champion and her friend of the Bidarteko Surf Club finished the race in 4:34 under Saint Jean de Luz’s beach crawlers acclamation.
THE ORIGINS OF PADDLEBOARD
Since the birth of surfing in Polynesia and thru the centuries, paddling
became a very demanding sport using the strength of arms and forbidding the
use of a paddle. Originally used for ocean lifesaving, paddleboard racing
require exceptional athletic condition but also a competitive spirit, an
unconditional passion for the ocean and mostly an inclination for
individual efforts.

La première édition de la course de paddleboard QuiksilverEdition ralliant San Sebastian à Saint-Jean de Luz s’est achevée cet après-midi avec la victoire de l’équipage mixte, le CEFSSA 40 (Centre d’Entraînement et de Formation au Secourisme). Après 3h42 d’effort, la championne du monde de sauvetage en mer Stéphanie Barneix et son fiancé Walter Geyer se sont donc imposés dans cette édition inaugurale avec près de deux heures d’avance sur les derniers concurrents. 21 équipes au total, ont parcouru ce trajet physique et technique de 34 km aussi éprouvant pour le corps que l’esprit dans le décor magique de la baie de Biscaye au Pays Basque.
Un départ crucial et une course très technique
Les équipages ont pris le départ à 10h ce matin dans la baie de la Concha à Saint-Sébastien. Disposés en ligne et assistés d’un bateau chacun, les équipes ont débuté la course à toute allure, cherchant à se positionner le mieux possible dès le départ même si la course est longue. En effet 4 heures d’un effort comparable à celui d’un marathon les attend. A tour de rôle, les équipiers se relaient sur la longue planche de 12 pieds (3m65) et alternent les phases d’effort et de repos en essayant de trouver le bon rythme. Les courants, les bancs de rochers et les difficultés multiples que la navigation côtière implique dans cette région de l’Atlantique sont des paramètres cruciaux que les équipes ont dû gérer au mieux durant la course. D’après Stéphanie Barneix, le plus compliqué fut certainement de ne pas se laisser dériver et de garder le cap afin de ne pas gaspiller des forces pour rien.
Stéphanie Barneix : Un palmarès éloquent
Nageuse chevronnée auréolée de plusieurs titres internationaux (Championne du Monde de 4x90 m en Australie en 2000) et surfeuse assidue, cette landaise de 29 ans originaire de Mont de Marsan est devenue une grande spécialiste du sauvetage en mer. Si le paddleboard est avant tout pour elle, un moyen de sauver des vies, cette pratique devient vite un sport à part entière dans lequel elle s’investit pleinement et met à profit ses qualités physiques, son sens de la glisse et son mental hors du commun.
6 fois Championne de France de sauvetage côtier, elle est aussi devenue la Championne du Monde du genre. Déjà l’an passé, Stéphanie Barneix a participé en solo à la course de paddleboard longue distance de référence entre Molokai et Oahu à Hawaii, soit 59 km dans l’Océan Pacifique parcourus en 7h. Qualifiée d’office pour l’édition 2004 qui se tiendra le 1er Août prochain, la landaise s’est engagée en équipe avec son futur époux (vainqueur de la Molokai en 2003 dans sa catégorie d’âge) et compte bien apporter un nouveau titre à son palmarès déjà bien fourni.
Une course serrée
4 minutes seulement séparent l’équipage vainqueur des concurrents Luziens Ludovic Duloup et Jonathan Desperges. Maîtres nageurs sauveteurs d’expérience, les deux hommes ne sont pas parvenus à revenir à la hauteur des vainqueurs du jour malgré leur détermination. Ils terminent néanmoins à une superbe deuxième place devant le tandem basque espagnol Pena Txuri de David Bustamente et Jaime Fernandez.
A noter, la belle performance de l’unique équipage féminin Emmanuelle Joly / Rachel Lecoute. La Championne d’Europe de Surf et sa complice du Bidaterko Surf Club bouclent la course en 4h34 sous les applaudissements nourris du public luzien.
Les origines du paddleboard
Depuis la naissance du surf dans les îles polynésiennes et au fil des siècles, la rame est devenue une discipline sportive exigeante qui se pratique à la force des bras, sans pagaie. Utilisée à l’origine pour le sauvetage en mer, le paddleboard requiert des aptitudes athlétiques mais aussi un esprit de compétition, une passion inconditionnelle pour la mer et surtout le goût de l’effort individuel.
