Quiksilver Pro
Macy’s E-Series Event #3
Maili Point, Oahu
30 January 2005
Jesse Merle Jones stops the three-peat and
Kekoa Uemura wins his second event of the season
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 January 2005: - - After surviving the heavy monsoon that flooded the island of Oahu on Saturday afternoon, the Quiksilver Pro, third stop on the Macy’s E-Series season resumed competition on Sunday in flawless 2 to 4 foot surf at Maili Point. With a solid amount of entries in both the long and shortboard divisions, everyone knew the competition would be fierce.
The 25 minuet men’s shortboard final showcased a mix of rising, veteran, and international competitors. Jesse Merle Jones known for his quick and powerful surfing was in top form both days. Jones pulled off a big upset in the semi finals when he eliminated current ratings leader and winner of the first two Macy’s E-Series events Fred Patacchia Jr.
In the final Jones continued to carve his way through bowling and racing waves at Maili Point, and just destroyed his last wave in the final to receive the highest score of the heat a 9.00. Makakilo’s Joel Centeio finished a close second, in third was visiting Indonesian surfer Dede Suryana, and Ewa Beach’s Isaac Kaneshiro finished fourth.
In the longboard final Kekoa Uemura wasted no time and got out to an early lead by getting a near perfect score of 9.75 on a huge bomb set wave. Uemura was very patient and waited for the best set waves, and with less than 10 minutes left in the heat Uemura caught another set wave to leave the rest of the finalist in the dust needing a combination score to take the lead away from him. Finishing in a distant second was Ned Snow, third place went to event # 2 winner Kegan Edwards, and rounding out the final was Kapono Nahina.
This year the Macy’s E-Series added the No Fear Free-for-all presented by Free Surf magazine. The No Fear Free-for-all took the third and fourth place finishers from the semi finals, this gave them a chance to surf one more time and get the best one wave score to win the $500.00 first place prize. After loosing in a very close semi final heat Fred Patacchia Jr regained his composure and out surfed the competition to win the No Fear Free-for-all.
A big mahalo to Macy’s, Quiksilver, Free Surf Magazine, Board Stories, No Fear, and all the Westside boyz for helping to make this event a huge success.
The Macy’s E-Series is a new and unique style of surfing competition geared toward the elite shortboard and longboard surfers in Hawaii, this series is a good stepping stone for these hot up and coming local surfers to sharpen their skills for professional surfing competitions around the world.
