FIRST EVER OREGON PROFESSIONAL SURF EVENT FINALLY CALLED
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 08 December, 2005 : - - Lincoln City, OR – The first annual Nelscott Reef Tow-In Contest will be held Sunday December 11th, 2005. Organizers, Behemoth, LLC, run by John Forse, Roland Hoyle and Jim Kusz, decided today to call an official opening to the Nelscott Reef Tow-In Contest, just one week before the end of the contest period, October 15 – December 15, 2005.
As of Thursday, December 1st exclusive contest co-sponsor Action Sports Northwest (actionsportsnw.com) reported “there is a large system forecast to develop in the Pacific that should push some long period, large swell our way. The swell is still about ten days out, but it has good potential so far.”
Contest status was then moved from red alert to yellow to signify the impending weather system and surf conditions.
“It’s been a bit nerve-wracking, we’ve been working on this contest for 4 months and the past 6 weeks have been a nail-biter. But I spoke today with John Forse, the contest founder, and we’re set for the start of the contest this Sunday in Lincoln City,” said Adam Wagner, President of Action Sports Northwest (actionsportsnw.com)
Today, the status was turned to green. The rush is on for competitors to get to the beach for the contest start time of 8AM on Sunday December 11th. The list of competitors, by invitation only, includes the world’s best big wave tow-in surfers including Peter Mel, Jeff Clark, and Mike Parsons, battling it out for the $20,000 purse. There will be an event headquarters located on the cliff above Nelscott Reef and directly overlooking the break. There will be an area for media to shoot from and several sponsors will have booths set up. The contest will be followed by a dinner and award ceremony, open to the public, at the Chinook Winds Casino’s Golf Resort.
The contest is Oregon surfing’s first ever professional competition. The reef was discovered in 1995 by Oregon surfer and contest founder John Forse. Forse attempted to paddle into a huge breaking wave about 1/2 mile offshore from Lincoln City. He wasn't able to catch the wave, but the quest had begun. Ten years later, the wave has been successfully ridden, but only with the assistance of high-powered wave runners.
Further updates
The contest will be starting at 8AM this Sunday December 11th. We are starting just about at high tide and should be holding the finals at low tide. The forecast is excellent – Sunny, mid 50’s, light offshore winds, and a solid 12-14’ swell at good interval.
There is no parking along the beach or any of the roads along the beach, so please park at the top of Price and Pride (City Hall) and shuttle or walk down.
PLEASE RESPECT THE HOMES ALONG COAST AVE AND THE SURROUNDING STREETS. This is a residential area not set up to have hundreds of cars parked on the street. We should leave the area cleaner than when we got there.
The Award Ceremony will be held at the Chinook Winds Golf Course. Doors open at 5:30 and tickets are available at the door. The evening will have food, a no-host bar, video footage from the event and of course, the awards.
For those of you that can not make it to the contest, We will be moving the web camera to a location much closer to the reef. The reef will be almost straight out from this location, so we are hoping for a much closer shot. I will also be posting the results of each heat on the web page. We have also added a forum to the site. Feel free to discuss the contest, post pics, or anything else Action Sports related.
Please check www.actionsportsnw.com for more details.
There is continuous webcam coverage provided by actionsportsnw.com, aimed at the break – go to www.actionsportsnw.com/nelscottreef during daylight hours PST.
