NSSA Hawaii Open and Explorer Seasons Event #7

NSSA HAWAII CONFERENCE

OPEN, EXPLORER EVENT #7

FEBRUARY 2-3, 2002

ALI I BEACH PARK (HALEIWA)

Reported by: Hoku Webb

Three blasts of the horn started the NSSA Hawaii event #7 at Ali Beach Park (Haleiwa). The waves were kind of small, it the two to three foot range but for the groms it was double overhead! 2001 National Explorer Menehuene champion Kai Barger, John-John Florence and a few other little kids posted perfect 10 wave scores. Watching those kids, sometimes you would lose count on how many times they would hit the lip. Nationals? These kids are going to eat it for breakfast. Us big kids were losing it every Menehuene heat. The groms surf like it is a final every heat. I think it is all the licorice they eat before their heats. If it were not for the NSSA trademark licorice, our Menehuene division would not be the same.
