Greg Long wins the Billabong Pico Alto Invitational 2009

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 July, 2009 : - - The Billabong International Big-Wave World Championship wrapped up Monday, July 6th in glassy, contestable 15-foot surf. The event, held at Peru's famed Pico Alto, started out partly cloudy in the morning and with little wind, and held decent shape and size throughout the day.

HIGHLIGHTS: Six of the world's best big-wave riders faced off with Peru's local big-wave surfers. While the Peruvians held their own in the heavy conditions, XXL-winner Greg Long stepped up to take the win, carving another notch in his big-wave belt.

Although up-and-coming Peruvian surfer Javier Swayne placed second to Jose Gomez in the '06 event, Javier managed a fifth place this year. In the semis, Javier broke his board and ended up surfing the finals on a borrowed board from Peter Mel. "It was a very good gesture on behalf of Peter," said Javier. "Nevertheless he's a lot bigger than me, so the board was very wide for me."

The other Peruvian that make it into Finals was Rafael Velarde, who scored the second best wave of the event after Peter Mel.

It wasn't to anyone's surprise that Greg Long dominated the final. Though, Carlos Burle of Brazil also deserves recognition for pulling out a strong second place finish, while another Californian, Peter Mel, finished third and Hawaiian Mark Healy received fourth.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 July, 2009 : - - Lima -- La segunda fecha del Campeonato Mundial de Ola Grande ‘Billabong Pico Alto Internacional 2009’ realizado en el Perú culminó hoy con olas increíbles. El estadounidense Greg Long ocupó el primer lugar y se llevó a casa USD$ 5000 dólares en efectivo y una experiencia que jamás olvidará: “El mejor recuerdo que me llevo son los amigos que he hecho en el Perú y los momentos compartidos en el agua. Pico Alto es una ola de clase mundial, la organización a sido de primera, y los locales ni qué decir.

En el mundo no hay muchos campeonatos de Ola Grande, esta iniciativa es buenísima, sin duda es de los mejores campeonatos en los que he estado”.
La final fue disputada por cuatro extranjeros y dos peruanos. Esta fue dominada de principio a fin por el californiano Greg Long (23.5 puntos), mientras que el brasilero Carlos Burle (18.85 puntos) logró ubicarse segundo recién al final de la hora y media que duró la final. El tercer lugar lo ocupó el estadounidense Peter Mel con 16.1 puntos y el cuarto el hawaiiano Mark Healy con 15 puntos.

Por el Perú, el reconocido surfista Javier Swayne volvió a llegar a la final del campeonato Billabong Pico Alto (en la última edición del 2006 se ubicó segundo). Emocionado declaró: “Participar en este campeonato fue emocionante, he aprendido mucho de los grandes del Surf de Ola Grande. Me hubiese gustado lograr un mejor resultado pero en la final las olas se demoraron un poco”.

Javier tuvo que surfear la final con una tabla prestada. El estadounidense Peter Mel, en un generoso gesto, le prestó su tabla ya que en semifinales Javier partió la suya. “Fue un muy buen gesto de parte de Peter, sin embargo él es mucho más grande que yo, la tabla era muy ancha para mí. Cada vez que pasaba por un bache en la ola saltaba cerca de 1 metro”, confesó Swayne. Fue así como en su primera ola, estrenando la tabla de Mel, se llevó su peor revolcón.

El Perú a demostrado a lo largo de este campeonato ser cuna de Corredores de Ola Grande. Los extranjeros confesaron estar sorprendidos por la ola y por los surfistas peruanos: “Había escuchado hablar de Pico Alto, pero vino sin saber qué esperar, realmente la ola me ha sorprendido, tiene mucha fuerza y es de primer nivel, Pico Alto tiene que entrar al mapa mundial de Ola Grande, el mundo debe conocerla”, declaró Peter Mel.

“Nunca pensé que Pico Alto tenía tanta fuerza, ansío regresar para el próximo año para volver a correr el Billabong Pico Alto”, dijo el campeón Greg Long.
Sin duda el ‘Billabong Pico Alto Internacional’ reafirma su fama a nivel mundial de campeonato de alto riesgo.

Seis de los mejores surfistas de Ola Grande del mundo se enfrentaron a los mejores surfistas peruanos. El Perú quedó bien parado. Solo queda esperar por el próximo año para volver a medir el nivel del surfing local.

Este año el campeonato contó con el apoyo de la bebida energética Burn, Relojes Nixon y lentes Von Zipper. Así como también con Terra Perú.
