1800Reverse Junior Surf Off just went Off! at Dee Why

1800Reverse Jr Surf Off went Off!!!
Sat April 27th 2002, Dee Why Beach.
35 top junior surfers from around the country converged on Dee Why Beach today to contest Australia´s richest one day junior surfing event the 1800 Reverse Jr Surf Off.
Conditions were very surfable despite the cross shore southerly, with with some solid 3ft (6ft top to bottom) waves on offer. The rain held out and the sun shone through for most of the day.
As many of these surfers are aspiring professionals the surfing talent was world class. New age surfing moves were combined with solid maneuvers to give plenty of high scoring rides. Due to the format of the 1800Reverse surfers had to use tactical skill as well their surfing talent.
Each heat offered $100 prize money for the winner, who was determined by one scoring wave that the surfer nominates within 5 seconds of completing the ride. Once a ride is nominated it is then let to the other surfers to try to better that score in the 12 minutes allotted. The winner of the heat then moved on to the next heat to take on two new rivals and the process was continued. There are two rounds run in reverse order to ensure each surfer has a chance to surf an equal number of heats.
Surfers such as Qld´s Wade Goodall and Newcastle´s Travis Lynch had the system wired with great surfing and smart thinking, both surfers picking up big dollars and winning plenty of heats. Many of the other surfers also showed how it was done with plenty progressing a few rounds.
Official results are as follows-
8 heats and $800 Wade Goodall (Noosa)
6 heats and $600 Travis Lynch (Newcastle)
3 heats and $300 Nick Riley (Manly)
