Beau Young wins O´Neill Longboard Classic.

Australian Beau Young made it two victories in a row at the O´Neill Longboard Classic in Spain. (He won the previous event at Caparica last week).

The former world champion defeated Duane DeSoto(Haw) in the final held in difficult waves at Zurriola Beach, San Sebastian, Spain. Colin McPhillips(USA) and Rodrigo Danilo(Brz) were equal third.

Progress report;-

The 6th edition of the O´Neill Longboard Classic has started with a bang: 4 previous world champions (Colin Mc Philipps from USA, Beau Young from Australia and Dino Miranda and Bonga Perkins from Hawaii) and 2 famous names (french/american Ryan Hackman, the son of Jeff Hackman "Mr Sunset" and Stephen Slater from USA, Kelly´s brother) entered the event.

This contest has a real international flavour with 95 entries including 12 Americans, 14 Australians, 10 Brazilians, 8 Hawaiians, 4 Japonese, 4 South Africains ...and the best Europeans, there was hardly any room for the local surfers. The level was very high with a few very good new comers in the young generation like Australian Sebastien Wilson.

This year the surfers are playing for a total purse of 20 000 Euros. The surf conditions (2 feet off shore) and the weather (sunny) were great for the first day with many people enjoying the show on the promenade. Despite the strong wind the waves were still rideable for a longboard contest on Saturday.

El campeón de la 6ª edición del O´Neill Longboard Classic es Beau Young. El australiano, hijo del mítico longboarder 4 veces campeón del mundo Nat Young, se impuso al hawaiano Duane Desoto en una final espectacular donde ambos contrincantes lucharon contra la adversidad del mar para hacerse con la victoria. Y es que, en esta edición, las olas han complicado la labor de los surfistas, entre los cuales los más grandes han demostrado por qué están en los primeros puestos. Han sabido dar una lección de buen surf a todas las personas que se han acercado hasta la playa y que, según avanzaba la tarde, abarrotaban la barandilla de la Playa de la Zurriola.

El clasicismo, la rigurosidad y el buen hacer del australiano han quedado patentes a lo largo de los tres días que ha durado esta copa puntuable para el tour mundial de surf y con unos buenos resultados diarios ha logrado imponerse con sobrada ventaja ante todo aquel contra el que ha competido; ha podido incluso con un Colin Mc Phillips que se creía ganador indiscutible. Con esta victoria en San Sebastián, ha dado un paso más para hacerse con el título de campeón del mundo del 2002 y así acercarse al palmarés de su padre. Beau Young fue también ganador en el Open Zone de 1999 y campeón del mundo del 2000. Duane Desoto, 9ª en el ranking actual, se coló in extremis en la final, venciendo al jovencísimo brasileño Danilo Rodrigo de 17 de años, gran revelación de esta edición y que ha sido capaz de dejar fuera al subcampeón del mundo Jason Ribbink, así como a otras grandes figuras consagradas del surf.

En cuanto al skate el nivel que han demostrado los patinadores ha sido altísimo. Se ha arriesgado hasta el último salto, truco y maniobra, en una competición dura y al límite donde los franceses, canarios, catalanes y vascos han sido los mejores. Orlando Acosta (campeón de este año) Frederic Coustaut e Ivan Rivado, segundo y tercero respectivamente, nos han deleitado con un espectáculo que los congregados en torno al imponente skatepark han sabido agradecer con calurosas ovaciones que no hacían sino motivar a nuestros reyes del deslizamiento.

Este año se han repartido 20.000 euros en premios, Beau Young ha sido el más afortunado con 4000 euros, el segundo clasificado Duane Desoto se va a casa con 3000 euros. Mientras que Colin Mc Phillips y Danilo Rodrigo han recibido 1700 euros cada uno por alcanzar la semifinal. El resto se lo han repartido los 16 surfistas mejor clasificados.

Event preview

The world´s top longboarders are gathering at Playa de la Zurriola, one of the best urban beach breaks there is. What´s more, last year the number of surfers who entered the competition broke all records! 100 surfers took part in the competition compared to 68 two years before.

Since its creation, this event has strived to push to the forefront the young surfers who were reinventing Longboarding. It was a dramatic choice in a city that had little Longboarding history. Nevertheless, it took off. The waves on La Zurriola beach, the fresh style of the event and the good vibrations of a competition, in which all of those who took part enjoyed themselves, led the competition to a level of success that nobody would have guessed.

This is the fourth year of the O´Neill Longboard Classic as an international ASP Longboard contest offering 20,000 Euros prize money.

In recent years three world champions have competed: Colin Mc Phillips EEUU, (current World Champion and 1999 World Champion), Beau Young AUS (2000 world champion) and Bonga Perkins HAWAII (1998 world champion). We have also seen the greatest surfers of every continent represented Jimmy Gamboa (EEUU), Duane De Soto (EEUU), Grant Thomas (AUS), Amaro Matos (BRA), Zack Howard (EEUU), the current European champion Romain Maurin (FRA).

The Tag Team (National Team Surf Trophy) and the new "Zurriola Noseriding" competition will conclude the exciting programme for this weekend. The first professional surfing competition in surfing history was held in 1965 in California and the winner was the surfer who was able to surf as long as possible on the nose of his longboard. There will be a revival of this stylish and elegant competition at the Open Zone.
