Richardson wins QCC title/Quiksilver Pro trials wildcard

Darren Turner blows the opposition away and
Mark Richardson claims QCC title & Quiksilver Pro Trials Wildcard.

Darren Turner turned in a devastating performance to win the Open division of the Burleigh Heads Hotel Surfing Queensland Masters by more than 5 points (Total of 24 points out of possible 30), but former Australian Champion, Mark Richardson just did enough to claim the Queensland Title, and walk away with the wildcard for the Quiksilver Pro Trials, a chance to take on the top 44 surfers in the world. Finishing in 3rd spot in the final event of the Queensland Championship Circuit, Richardson out pointed his main rival for the Qld Title, Mermaid Beach Surfer, Scott Wildin who finished a mere 60 points behind Richardson in the series, Wildin’s 2nd place in the event not enough to give him a victory in the series.

“I’m stoked”, said an elated Richardson, after finding out that he had won the Championship, “Darren blew up in the final, I saw that last wave, but I’ve done what I wanted to do, take the Qld Title and the Quiksilver Pro Trials wildcard”.

Richardson now will be focused to take out the trials event at the Quiksliver Pro, and have a go at the top 44 surfers in the World in the first event of the 2003 World Championship Tour. Richardson also picked up a second place in the QCC over 28 division, and can have a go at claiming the Open and over 28 National Titles at the Australian Masters Titles held at North Stradbroke Island in July 2003.

Burleigh Boardriders also scored a double, with Kyle Robinson making it back to back Queensland over 28 titles, and the Sheriff of Burleigh Heads, Dwayne Harris claiming his first Queensland Title in the over 35 years division. It was Dwayne’s first Queensland Title in over 26 years of competition, and was overcome with joy to say the least.

In the Women’s division, Carmen Buecher took out the event, while surfing super-mum Mandy Roberts was the standout winning both over 28 & over 35 divisions and Qld Titles, while qualifying for the team in the Open women’s.

Divisions from men and women from open to over 50 competed, and the ½ metre peaks at the Southport Spit were witness to some high performance surfing.
