The contest was founded by legendary waterman, Buffalo Keaulana in 1977 and was developed out of a desire to maintain and further develop the Hawaiian culture, especially in the ocean and surfing. On Keaulana’s return home from a sailing trip that was focused on retracing ancient Polynesian migration roots to and from Hawaii, he recognized a huge need to keep the Hawaiian surfing heritage growing with an attitude that stressed fun and camaraderie in surfing contest. This appeals to competitors who join the contest to enjoy the Hawaiian culture, family involvement and fun side of surfing that, through this event, is brought to the contest circuit.
Bud Light and the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association are proud sponsors of this classic community event.
