Hogs Breath Café Longboard Legends Tour
Event #5
Avalon Beach, Mandurah WA.
24 - 25 May 2003
Exceptional conditions prevail for Longboard Legends Tour
Two days of exceptional surfing conditions at Avalon Point, Mandurah rewarded surfers competing in round 5 of the Hogs Breath Café Longboard Legends Tour. With 2 metre plus waves, light winds and plenty of sunshine the competitors and spectators were all in longboard heaven.
In the World Surfaris/Sa’Moana Resort 9ft Pro Trigg Island’s Tim Fitzpatrick used a combination of sweeping turn to outclass Neil Thompson and series leader Jackson Close to win. Close still maintains a handy lead in the series going into the final event at Port Macquarie.
Some of the biggest waves of the contest came through during the women’s final. Former Australian champ Claire Finucane took off on the largest waves to beat Sam Vanderford for the second year in a row.
NSW’s Mitch Sheehy has made the art of nose riding his own after taking out his third win in 3 appearances on tour. With a total of 27.63 seconds Sheehy was well clear of second placed Paul Thompson on 16.90 seconds.
The Thompson Brothers from Margaret River put on an unbelievable display of synchronized surfing in the G Boards Family Teams. Choosing several well over head waves the Thompson’s executed everything from late takeoffs to crossovers to high speed turns and even a dead cockroach ride to keep the crowd entertained. They were closely emulated by the McCormick’s who eventually won courtesy of an age handicap system.
A series of snap turns in the critical part of the wave was the reason Burt Berger made it two in a row, successfully defending the Ebanc 9ft Amateur title. He was pushed all the way by Kevin Anderson with Joe Warwick third.
Jock Bahen lived up to his reputation as arguably the countries best old mal (boards constructed prior to 1967) winning this division from Paul Thompson with Kevin Anderson 3rd.
In the Under 18’s Rahn Goddard put on a class act scoring 17.5 out of 20 to easily account for NSW’s Jake Mills.
The tightest finish all weekend was in the Over 50’s division where defending round 5 champion Mick Marlin edged out Norm Batemen. Both surfers caught absolute howlers of rides to score 16.5 out of 20 for their two scoring waves with Marlin finally getting the win after a count back to their 4th waves.
