Red Bull Big Wave Africa Waiting For Next Swell
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 June, 2007 : - - Hout Bay - Johnny Paarman, the contest director for the Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2007 event, remained steadfast in his decision not to run the event 18 June despite some strong opinions that he should go ahead.
This decision proved to be the right one. While Dungeons provided some solid 20 to 25-foot sets, they were far from ideal for running the event, with wide sets, big steps on the wave faces and many of the wave closing out across the inside reef.
A few tow teams got out there to feel the Dungeons power and to reacquaint themselves with the somewhat foreboding Dungeons line-up. Durban surfers Grant 'Twiggy' Baker and Jason Ribbink scored a couple of excellent rides, as did former event winner Californian Greg Long.
"It was really difficult out there," said Jason after his first session with tow-partner Gigs Cilliers. "It was definitely the right decision not to go with the event. The waves were big, but weird and coming from all directions. There's still plenty of time for the event."
This morning (19 June) dawned with a marked drop in swell, to almost half the size of yesterday, and Paarman had no hesitation in calling it off for now, in order to wait for the next storm. A week of good surf is still ahead of us, with Saturday still looking like a prime day to run the event . Check redbullbwa.com for regular updates.
