Mormaii Pe’ahi World Cup Tow-In Surfing Champs forecast not looking good
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 January, 2009 : - - This is NOT looking good. Swell is still OK for Thursday with solid sets in the 20 foot+ range Hawaiian. Friday still solid in the 18-20 foot range, but the swell dropping to the 15 foot range over the weekend. Swell models did come down a bit and as we suspected they were running too hot on the swell sizes last week.
The big issue is the wind. The low pressure system will be dropping down closer to the islands on Thursday and Friday which will result in stronger 15-25 knot SSW winds, shifting WSW 20-25 knots by late Thursday and Friday.
With those winds it pretty much kills our chances of getting it really good for the competition. I went ahead and checked out a number of different wind models and they often have their own personality, but most are concurring with these poor winds.
So considering everything and the tremendous logistics of everyone traveling from all over the world for this comp, in my opinion it's too risky to likely fail to be good enough considering the scope of what this event is trying to achieve - Sean Collins
