Big surf on the 40th Anniversary of the biggest surf ever to hit the Hawaiian Islands.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 December, 2009 : - - North Shore, Hawaii - Big surf was rolling into Waimea Bay on the 40th Anniversary of the biggest surf ever to hit the Hawaiian Islands. The Eddie Aikau event Invitees & alternates had solid a 18- to 20-foot warmup swell at Waimea Bay this-morning, just a touch undersize for the event to run.

Eyes are on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday - all three days are forecast to exceed the event's required minimum threshold of 20 feet. NWS reports that swell will build early Monday and continue into Tuesday and Wednesday with open ocean swell heights exceeding 22 feet. This will translate to wave heights of 30 feet or higher at North Shore surf spots.

Largest Waves Ever Contested at Sunset Beach 

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 December, 2009 : - - Sunset Beach -- The O'Neill World Cup of Surfing laid claim to running in the largest surf ever contested in the 27-year history of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Waves were topping out this morning at 20 to 25 feet and often closing out totally across the bay.

Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Opening Ceremony

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 December, 2009 : - - Waimea Bay, Hawaii - At the opening ceremony of the 25th anniversary of The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau event contest Director George Downing and Aikau's brother Clyde announced the event would run within the week. All forecasts point towards one of the largest swells to hit Hawaii in decades. "Seven, eight or nine," said Downing "It's gonna happen one of those days."
