Gnarliest Conditions The PipeGirls Have Ever Competed On At The SeaHawaii Womens Pro at Pipeline
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 March, 2012 : - - Day 9 of the holding period, the final day for Women's 1-Star WQS and Junior's 2-Star shortboard division was definitely a test of mother nature for the SeaHawaii Womens Pro at Pipeline. Due to stormy conditions throughout the holding period, led the women to have to bare with whatever conditions the final day was to deal them. Unfortunately they were not the most ideal Pipe conditions at 4-6 feet Hawaiian scale with winds coming in from all directions and a ripping current throughout the day that led for a very challenging task for all the women that paddled out into the lineup.
Contest director Betty Depolito stated, "We were very lucky that we were able to finish the contest due to the crazy stormy conditions. Thanks to the water patrol, Aloha Lifesaving, they made this contest happen giving rides to the ladies out to the lineup between each heat."
The ladies spent most of their day paddling over to Gums, the surfbreak to the right of Pipeline, just to find a rideable wave due to the treacherous waves at Pipeline. The women did not just show determination out in the water today, but also stayed positive and optimistic for better sets to come in. That mentality seem to payoff as the day went on the sets appeared to clean up a bit for the surfers, but also larger sets were starting to roll in keeping everyone in the lineup on their toes.
This year's Junior division featured girls from Hawaii, USA, and a lone competitor from Canada. This year's Womens division had the majority of competitors from Hawaii and USA, but also individual competitors from Australia and Canada. The youngest of the competitors was 12-year-old Meah Collins, daughter of surfing legend Richie Collins. Meah competed in not just the Juniors but also the Womens division as well making it to the quarterfinals. The veteran is Pipeline pioneer Rochelle Ballard at 41. Rochelle who competed on the WQT for 17 years retired in 2007 enjoys competing back at the place where her and Keala Kennelly paved a path for women surfing at Pipeline.
Besides the most dangerous weather conditions the SeaHawaii Womens Pro at Pipeline has ever seen, it's defending champion Tatiana Weston-Webb that was able to turn heads. Tatiana a 15-year-old grom from Kauai, HI surfed an astounding seven heats between the Junior and Women divisions and made the finals in both divisions. She surfed a massive 2 1/2 hours of heat time and three heats surfing back-to-back-to-back.

Although not taking home the title in either division she most certainly made a lasting impression on all spectators. Therefore she was named the Princess of Pipeline. Bianca Valenti took home the title for the Women's division and Alisha Gonsalves from Honolulu, HI finished up on top of the Junior's division.
SeaHawaii's goal is to bring awareness of the sensitivity of the environment and ecological changes to our oceans. "SeaHawaii is proud to be supporting the event at Pipeline," said SeaHawaii CEO Joe Pickard. Locally owned and operated SeaHawaii was born and raised up on the North Shore in Kahuku. The company is an environmentally based group that absolutely "Loves the Ocean" a trademark. Their dedication to our environment is a great fit for the event something the Pipeline Womens Pro has worked towards since it's inception.
