Surfing Magazine drafts Duncan Macfarlane and Corey Wilson onto its photo team

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 March, 2012 : - - San Clemente -- Surfing Magazine would like to propose a toast to the hiring of our new senior photographers, Duncan Macfarlane and Corey Wilson. Although "senior" might be the wrong word. Both Duncan and Corey are just 22 years old, and are injecting fresh perspectives and youthful energy into the world's best surf magazine.

"It gets harder every day to create unique photography for our readers," says SURFING photo editor Peter Taras, "but Duncan and Corey are both passionate about capturing the untapped world of surfing."

Would you like to meet Duncan and Corey? They're very friendly. Globetrotter Duncan Macfarlane was born in Perth, Western Australia. He grew up in Sydney until he was six and then moved to Tanzania, East Africa. The Macfarlane's returned to Australia in 2000 and, during his senior year of high school, Duncan found photography.

After finishing school he traveled for a year and a half - with his camera on his hip - mastering his craft. He shot surfing. He shot people. He shot everything. In 2011 Duncan entered and won the prestigious Follow the Light grant and, well, we loved his work and personality so much that we hired him. He's been spinning gold ever since. Appreciate his work here.

Forget being a fireman or an astronaut, Santa Cruz born and bred Corey Wilson has now reached his life's goal. Seriously. On his high school graduation questionnaire that asked about his dream job, Corey wrote "senior photographer for SURFING Magazine." Traveling. Shooting. Fun and fame. What else could a guy want? The photography bug bit Corey in the wave-rich Santa Cruz region, shooting with local pros like Nat Young and Bud Freitas before migrating south to earn a degree from the Brooks Institute of Photography.

Corey then moved to Newport (where he now resides) and worked with Rip Curl, Kawasaki and Surfline before joining the SURFING family and getting comfortable in his dream job. As you read this he's on his first SURFING mag assignment in Australia. (Aussies, better lock up your wives and daughters.)

"Having these kids mesh with our more veteran senior photographers [DJ Struntz, Tom Carey and Steve Sherman] is going to add an exciting new element to SURFING," says Taras. Talent. Youth. Fun. Exciting indeed. Duncan and Corey are a perfect fit for a magazine that celebrates just that: Talent. Youth. Fun.

Welcome to the team, boys! For both Corey and Duncan's work, view our most recent flipbook from the Quiksilver Pro.
