Queensland's best dish it up through Inlement weather and chunky swell

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 April, 2012 : - - Gold Coast, Queensland -- The Sunshine Coast unfortunately, didn’t live up to its name today, with wet and windy conditions greeting competitors at Coolum Beach for day-one of the Chiko Sunshine Coast Pro.  However, the inclement weather certainly didn’t diminish the action in the water, with a chunky, 1.5m easterly swell and an AUD$6,000 prize pool providing plenty of incentive for competitors vying for the prestigious Queensland’s Open Men’s Surfing Title as part of this year’s four-event Chiko Queensland Championship Circuit (QCC).

Ratings leaders Lincoln Taylor (North Stradbroke Island, Qld) and Nathan Hedge (North Narrabeen, NSW) impressed along with Sunshine Coast local Dale Lovelock who will be looking to press his case for this year’s title.  Lovelock walked away with a win in the heat of the day after accumulating 12.83 points (out of a possible 20).

However, it was the battle for second that provided the highlights, with Thomas Woods (Burleigh Heads, Qld) nailing a massive air-reverse on his final wave to secure an 8.77 ride (out of a possible 10) and eliminate last year’s series runner up Clint Kimmins (Snapper Rocks, Qld – 10.90).

Tomorrow’s competition will resume with the quarter finals, before a champion is crowned in the afternoon. Based on competitors’ best three-of-four results, the series’ top two athletes will get the chance to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2013 ASP World Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials.

To ensure the QCC‘s top two athletes are performing at their optimum for the Quiksilver Pro Trials, Surfing Queensland in conjunction with Surfing Australia will provide two-days of training at the world-class Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre. The 2012 QCC boasts a stellar AUD$30,000 prize-pool, with an extra AUD$500 randomly awarded to four competitors who compete in all four events.

Also on offer will be the highly sought after XXXX Summer Bright Lager ‘Wave of the Weekend,’ with four cartons of XXXX Summer Bright Lager awarded to the competitor who registers the event’s highest single wave score (out of a possible 10 points) across the two-day competition.

The Chiko Sunshine Coast Pro is proudly supported by Chiko, XXXX Summer Bright Lager, Australia’s Surfing Life, Five and half Sunglasses, the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre, Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Surfing Queensland.  For competition start times/location, competitors and spectators can call the Surfing Queensland Events Hotline each morning of the event - Ph# (07) 3030 6388
