Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 May, 2012 : - - Waialua, HI -- Artist Hilton Alves will help the students of Waialua Elementary School welcome summer break with a live art exhibit creating a Surf Art Kids mural this Thursday. The artist will be painting an ocean inspired mural while other local artists and community members work with students to paint their own versions of the ocean we all love. Hilton explains, "I wanted to inspire the students to think of spending their summer in the ocean, observing the marine life, playing in nature and cleaning the beaches."

The mural is part of a larger project started by the artist called Surf Art Kids. Surf Art Kids is a social project designed to expose children and youth to environmental awareness and foster in them a respect and love for the ocean and marine life through art. Since its inception in 2004, Surf Art Kids has been able to touch the lives of over 3,000 children and community members in 10 cities in Brazil and 3 cities in Hawai’i. Starting at 8:00 a.m., 400 Waialua students will enjoy the interaction with the artist creating the mural for the school and with other local artists and volunteers who will encourage environmental awareness through art.

This is only possible because of thoughtful contributions from supporters and sponsors. Volunteers are encouraged to be a part of this event by helping with mural logistics and students activities. A special mahalo goes out to 9th Wave Gallery, the Capes Ohana of Waialua and the faculty of Waialua Elementary School for making this event possible.
