Garrett McNamara Big Wave Documentary to Broadcast on Fuel TV
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 June, 2012 : - - Haleiwa -- Garrett McNamara, ocean explorer and Guinness World Record holder will be featured in an hour-long documentary called 'GMac Big Wave Attack – The North Canyon' on Fuel TV Friday, June 8 starting at 9pm ET / 6pm PT. The first documentary of three follows McNamara on his journey to the discovery of the remarkable underwater canyon that causes some of the worlds most giant waves located in Nazaré, Portugal. The North Canyon has a 1,000 foot underwater trench creating ocean waves over 100 feet only 50 yards from the beach.
In the hour-long documentary you will see how when a fan sent one photograph of the North Canyon to McNamara it affected him as well as the economic impact and global awareness of the small fishing village received once McNamara made history.
You will also travel with McNamara through his journey of the trials and tribulations as well as his spiritual findings. McNamara continues to spread his life long mission of inspiration to others by opening a first ever aquatic training center, big wave museum and environmental education center in Nazaré.
The second documentary will cover the story of McNamara’s Guinness World Record breaking wave with never before seen footage. The third documentary will be filmed later this year when McNamara returns to Portugal to ride an even bigger wave. It will also focus on the completion of the aquatic training center where the best big wave surfers from around the world will be summoned to stay while competing in the 2012 Tow Championships.
About Garrett McNamara: Garrett McNamara has been an extreme adventurer since he was born, when at 11 months he launched himself out of a booster seat, which was sitting on a countertop. His move to the North Shore of Hawai’i in 1978 was the beginning of his career, where he quickly learned to surf and entered into the competition circuit.
McNamara spent the next several years tow surfing and winning many surfing competitions including a $70,000 purse at the Tow Surfing World Cup in Maui at Jaws in 2002. He has been photographed by major surfing magazines and made the cover of several after riding an incredible 20ft barrel off of the coast of Maui, Jaws. Always pushing the boundaries of surfing, McNamara partnered with Keali’I Mamala in 2007 and were the first humans to ever ride tidal waves formed by 300ft calving glaciers in Alaska.
In November 2011, McNamara broke the world record for largest wave ever surfed and was entered into the Guinness World Records. The 78ft wave was caught in Nazaré, Portugal. McNamara is currently on a mission to ride and even bigger wave and has plans to return to Europe to accomplish his goal later this year.
McNamara has been involved with the organization, Surfers Healing, touring the United States teaching autistic children how to surf. McNamara utilizes the revolutionary new technology,a jet surfboard by Wavejet, to take autistic children surfing with Surfers Healing. McNamara is currently partnered with Red Nose, Wavejet, Donjoy, Body Glove, Kona Red, Maui Jim, Raw Elements and Noll Worldwide.
