LIfe Is a Wave event to auction off Surfer's Dream House
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 June, 2012 : - It’s called the Surfer’s Dream House for good reason. It sits right off the beach facing one of the best right breaking waves in Costa Rica – Playa Negra. And CR Surf Travel Company is giving away two nights in this three bedroom, two bath oceanfront home to help the non-profit group Save the Waves raise funds for their programs that protect surf habitats around the world.
You can bid on this great prize, that also includes two top end Quiksilver suitcases, at the Life Is a Wave Benefit, being held this Friday evening, June 15th, at the 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, CA. Besides this amazing item there will be surfboards up for auction plus framed photography and artwork, jewelry, wetsuits, hotel stays, San Francisco Giants tickets, and many other contributions made by the local community to support Save the Waves.
For those that have never heard of Save the Waves, they are a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to be ‘dedicated to protecting and preserving the coastal environment, with an emphasis on the surf zone, and educating the public about its value.’ Their current programs include creating World Surfing Reserves to protect areas made famous from the quality surf there. Locations include Malibu and Santa Cruz in the United States, plus Ericeira in Portugal and Manly, NSW Australia. They also do Surfonomics research to determine the economic value of a surf break for the local community. And they are involved in saving surf breaks around the world from polluters and developers.
In Costa Rica, Pavones was chosen as the wave the most needed protection since at the time an experimental yellowfin tuna farm was proposed for an area less than three miles from the wave. Save the Waves and CR Surf Travel Company helped get petitions signed to successfully stop the project. Since the website, CRsurf.com, was started in 1998, it has shared information on most every major environmental issue affecting both coasts of Costa Rica. They protested oil drilling off the Caribbean Coast, led dozens of beach cleanups, helped protect sea turtles along the Guanacaste Coast, and now as a 1% for the Planet member contribute to local non-profits that protect the marine environment.
The mission of CR Surf Travel Company is to help surfers who live in and travel to Costa Rica find the best places to stay and surf. Their website and Facebook pages post the latest in travel specials, surf contests, environmental news, and showcase the best surf photography and videos in the country. The owner has over 15 years experience in planning Costa Rica surf trips for all budgets, from single backpackers to all inclusive luxury surf campers, honeymooners to high school surf teams. And as one of the first travel companies to register as a Benefit Corporation in California, sustainability and service to the community are their highest priorities.
