Event Opens in Port Macquarie in Clean Three-Foot Surf
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 June, 2012 : - - Port Macquarie -- Town Beach set the stage for opening day of the Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard State Titles 2012. Under the usual sunny skies the Port Macquaire region delivers each year, the clean 3 foot conditions on Town Beach got Round 1 underway. The left handler was favourable to goofy footers and some switch foot surfing was demonstrated in the soulful surfing of the elder statesmen who opened the prestigious event.
Competing in a state title for the first time since the 1960’s was Tweed Heads surfer Raymond Bevan. His 8 point ride against local Peter Hudson was one to watch and solidified his place straight into round 2 with Hudson. “ I did a couple of big Round house cut backs out there, it felt great. I’m a natural footer so it was a challenge, but I grew up on left hand waves on the central coast”, said Bevan.
Bevans surfing has defied doctors who gave him six months to live just three years ago. Diagnosed with Prostate cancer and dropping to a mere 35 kg a few years ago, has not stopped his zest for life and love of surfing. “I’m having a big comeback within myself, not just my surfing but my life. You know life is a blessing from one day to the next and I feel good, I’m a survivor and it's great to be surfing".
“I was around the 34 kg mark and very thin but now I’m jumping out of my skin, I’m very happy, I got an 8 point ride out there, one of the highest scoring rides of the day. I get to see my mates, it’s like a big meet and greet contest at the same time, I can’t wait to see Barry and the boys”, said Bevan. Fellow far north coaster Peter Becker (Palmvale) won his round 1 heat in the over 55’s, and moves straight to round 2 with Port Macquarie surfers Peter Hudson, Garry Taylor and George Watt (Bonny Hills).
Shelley Beach charger Danny Bond demonstrated the style and flow the man is known for in Longboard circles in the over 60’s, and the over 50’s brought some stylish surfing from Lenny Girdler (Port Macquarie) and John Skinner (Mount Warigal). Australian Skin Cancer Clinics are giving out FREE Skin Cancer Check Vouchers to all Surfing NSW Members at the State Longboard Titles and Janine was on hand to answer any questions competitors had in regards to regular skin checks.
With round 1 of the over 45, over 50, over 55 and over 60’s underway, tomorrow will see the requalifying heats of the Australia Skin Cancer Clinics NSW State Longboard Titles take place. The annual event will see competitors travel form all corners of the state to enjoy a week long competition and well over due catch up with friends. The Town Green Inn is the official competitors venue and will host a function on Thursday night for all competitors and their families.
An over 65’s division has been added for the Sea Dogs who continue to charge their way through the waves and the Under 16 Cadets division is filling up as Longboarding continues to grow in popularity.
The event will be fully mobile in the Port Macquarie area with Town Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants beach, Flyns Beach, Light House and North Haven Beach all venue options. The daily Running Schedule and Contest location will be confirmed on the Event Hotline (0458 247 212) after 7:00am each day of the event
