NSW Longboard Titles get down to the business end

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 June, 2012 : - - Port MacQuarie -- Five days in and the states best Longboarders have put on some stellar performances on the beaches of Port Macquarie. The Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW State Longboard Titles graced Lighthouse Beach today, after North Haven and Town Beach offered great conditions during the week.

The youngest competitors opened up proceedings in the protected north corner of Lighthouse Beach and 14 year old Callum Glover demonstrated a few classic Longboard walks to impressed judges. “I’m going a bit better in other comps up and down the coast so I decided to compete. This isn’t really my style, I work on my traditional surfing a lot and I’m better in a lot bigger surf so I hope it picks up tomorrow for the finals”, said Glover.

Competing for the first time in a state title, Glover is contending the under 16 and under 18 divisions, and is impressed by the waves the Port Macquarie region ahs to offer. “We got here yesterday afternoon and its my first time surfing here, I didn't know port Macquarie had good waves, I heard it was really good at North Haven Yesterday, we came down here in the afternoon and it was going off we couldn't believe it”.

“It’s the first time I have competed in a state title, and it’s the furthest I have gone in a comp. I think we got lucky with the waves earlier, there was a little less wind and long right hander, I wasn’t so lucky in the under 18’s”, said Glover who is in the under 16’s final and just missed out in the under 18’s.

Glover and 15 year old Declan Wyton (Annandale), surfed extremely well along with Jaya Guy and Kurt Wilson, the four under 16 division competitors move straight through to tomorrows semi finals. The under 18 boys division has a number of strong contenders. William Crowe (Collaroy) and Hugh Daugaard (Green point) are up against each other in the semi finals after an early morning battle placed them 1st and 2nd in the early heat.

The under 18 girls division saw young guns Kirra Perry (Scotts Head) and Roisin Carolan (Binna Burra), demonstrate some great longboarding. The pair are both competing in the open women’s division and have made it into the final against Bondi surfer Claire Norman and defending champion Erin Dark (Gerringong).

The open men’s final has been decided after some high scores from defending champ Jared Neal (Coffs Harbour), local Ian Bell and Lennox Head surfer Ben Dickens paved the way in the afternoon semis. The tough semi finals between the blue ribbon division wrapped up the day and the men's final will consist of Jared Neal (Coffs Harbour), Nick Farrago (Corrimal) and locals Ian Bell and Darren O'Rafferty.

Cancer Clinics are giving out FREE Skin Cancer Check Vouchers to all Surfing NSW Members at the State Longboard Titles and Janine was on hand to answer any questions competitors had in regards to regular skin checks.
