Gold Coast surfers worried about a proposed cruise ship terminal
Fear the terminal will affect the break that creates famous surf
Gold Coast economy relies heavily on surf based tourism
Cruise ship terminal plans at Tugen a threat to Gold Coast surf breaks
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 July, 2012 : - - If plans to build a cruise ship terminal at Tugen on the Gold Coast go ahead, surfers fear the plans could affect the famous breaks of the region. Local media recently revealed billionaire Bob Ell's plans to create an offshore cruise ship terminal and entertainment precinct.
Kirra Surf Riders after examining the plans, feared the famous waves in the region would suffer from the development. "It looks like the terminal will go out a fair way and they are talking about bringing in the Queen Mary 2 and battleships, which means it will be awfully deep, so what is going to happen to the surf?" they said.
The port would bring in tourism dollars, but may strip the Coast of its surfing reputation.
"The figures have been done on what surfing brings to the Gold Coast and if you take away the breaks you can forget surfing and you can forget the Quiksilver Pro," a Kirra Surf Riders spokesman said. "If you take away (the) world-class breaks you can forget the industry staying here and if you take away the surfers this city loses its soul." Read more
