Girls Grab Big Scores at Hurley NSW Junior Surfing State Titles
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 July, 2012 : - - Coffs Harbour - Welcomed with perfect sunny skies and clean conditions at Diggers Beach, the Hurley NSW Junior Surfing State Titles Presented by Vestal Watches, delivered high scores an array of divisions, none more so than the Under 18 girls.
Blitzing their way through to the semis undefeated, Kirstin Ogden (Suffolk Park), Stephanie Single (Lennox Head), and Cali McDonaugh (Lennox Head), found themselves dropping high scores in front of cheering crowds.
“I guess I always work best when I get an early start, in that heat I was lucky that the two waves I got were solid and I just surfed them as best I could, I’m super happy with the waves I had”, said Cali McDonaugh who won her heat catching just two waves.
“There’s heaps of lulls out there but when they do come through they have a really good wall on them and you can choose to go left or right, I was pretty lucky to get the waves I did”.
“Kirtsin and I go to the same high school and she’s a super good friend and even better competitor and a great surfer, I’m really looking forward to surfing against her tomorrow”, said McDonaugh.
McDonaugh will meet with school mate Kirstin Ogden in the semis tomorrow, Ogden nailed a very impressive 9.00 (out of a possible 10.00) and backed it straight up with an 8.50 to solidify her win in round 2.
Fellow Far North Coast surfer and stand surfer out of the division was Stephanie Single. Blitzing her competitors with an early start and winning herself ‘Hurley Wave of The Day’, Single not only grabbed a perfect 10 point ride, but added a 9.83 to tally herself a combined heat total of 19.83 (out of a possible 20.00).
Shinning bright and making great use of the perfectly suited waves for the groms, was the under 12 boys. Flying high and carving deep into the big open face of the waves at every chance, the grommets showcased the high quality of talent in the up and coming divisions.
Jay brown (Lilli Pilli) and Keanu Miller (Cabarita) opened the division with some sizeable waves scores; 8.17 (Jay) and a 7.40 (Keanu) put the pair trhough to round 2 where they will surf against south coast surfer Beau Buckpitt.
Kai Spriggs (Freshwater) also did well but only just didn’t make the next round. Jackson Roberts (Bateau Bay) and Karne Blackwell (Helensburgh), along with Finn Askew (South West Rocks), made it through to round 2 and will surf tomorrow on finals day of the Hurley NSW Junior Surfing State Titles Presented by Vestal Watches.
