VIDEO & SLIDESHOW: Day 3 Nike US Open of Surfing

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 July, 2012 : - - A stacked draw featuring the world's best surfers made for some close battles, heated exchanges and major upsets as the Men's Round of 96 kicked off in a fun but inconsistent mix of swells on the south side of the HB Pier.

Among the big names to go down early were Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow, Owen Wright and Ace Buchan, who couldn't track down the required scores needed to advance through to tomorrow's Round of 48. The giant-killers of those heats: Evan Geiselman, Tanner Gudauskas and Mitch Crews, looked in form and will continue to fight for valuable ASP WT qualification points in the later rounds.

Other top seeds like Australian Josh Kerr, Brazilian Miguel Pupo and South African Jordy Smith fared better than many of their World Tour compatriots, advancing through with dominating performances. Kerr and Pupo stayed above the lip with their go-to air game -- Kerr, recording the highest single wave score of a 9.50 and Pupo, the highest two-wave score of a 18.07 -- while Smith kept it on rail, scoring an impressive 9.0 with a series of turns out the back and closeout reverse on the inside. Pupo and Smith will face off in what promises to be a great Round of 48 matchup once competition resumes tomorrow.

Other crowd favorites, Dane Reynolds, Yadin Nicol, Gabriel Medina and defending US Open champion Kelly Slater, also advanced today with their usual displays of all-around great surfing.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow as the Round of 96 finishes up, the Round of 48 kicks off and Women's Round 1 begins.
