VIDEO & SLIDESHOW: Day 6 Nike US Open of Surfing

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 August, 2012 : - - The waves picked up a bit from yesterday, providing competitors with punchy 2-3 foot surf on Day 6 of the US Open of Surfing at the Huntington Beach Pier. Highlighting the Men's action was the performance of the Brazilian contingent, who recorded some of the highest waves of the day with incredible above-the-lip surfing.

Gabriel Medina (BRA) once again claimed the highest single-wave score with a 9.93, which featured a great combination of maneuvers — a floater to big air reverse to stylish layback slash into the pilings. Right there with him was reigning Junior US Open Champ, Filipe Toledo (BRA), who stomped two air reverses (the latter being a full-rotator) to the tune of a 9.80.

Both Medina and Toledo along with Miguel Pupo (BRA), Adriano DeSouza (BRA), Gabriel Medina (BRA), Stuart Kennedy (AUS), Nathaniel Curran (USA), John John Florence (HAW) and Julian Wilson (AUS) have moved straight through to the Round of 16, where they await their next opponent. Surfing tomorrow for their spot in the Round of 16 are other big names like Kelly Slater (USA), Yadin Nicol (AUS), Dane Reynolds (USA) and local hometown hero Brett Simpson (USA).

Other action today featured Women's Round 4, which determined the Quarterfinal match-ups, scheduled for Friday at 12:30pm. The Junior Men's Quarterfinals also went down in fine fashion — standouts being Conner Coffin (USA), who recorded an impressive 9.50 with his patented power surfing, Kanoa Igarashi (USA) and Filipe Toledo, who kept his momentum going from the main event into the Men's Juniors, scoring two more excellent rides. The Men's Junior Semifinals are set for 1:50pm on Saturday.

Back on land, there was plenty gong on for all in attendance — free, live music courtesy of Hindu Pirates, White Arrows and GroupLove, autograph signings, Nike and Converse brand experience booths and Converse and Nike skate demos. Be sure to come down to the HB Pier where all the fun is set to continue through August 5th. And if you can't make it, tune in to usopenofsurfing.com/live.
