$5,000 Total Purse and a Wildcard Seed Into the Vans Pro Men round of 96

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 August, 2012 : - - The surfing carnival of the summer is two weeks away from hitting the 1st street Jetty of Virginia Beach, Va.
This year celebrates the 50th annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships (CE-ECSC) presented by Vans – the oldest surfing contest in the United States.  Surfing competition will begin with the sun on Monday, August 20 and continue through Sunday, August 26.

The 2012 Coastal Edge ECSC will be an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-star rated event, and will be the first time a 6-star event as ever been held on the East Coast.  Only the top 144 ranked surfers will be surfing the 6-star rated divisions, the Vans Pro Men’s and Vans Pro Junior.   As a consequence of this higher ASP ranking, a large portion of local surfers and other competitors from across the United States would be ineligible to compete as they wouldn’t have enough rating points to surf either pro contest.

Local restaurateur, Bill Gambrel , owner of Tautog’s and Doc Taylor’s eateries, wanted to ensure the local and national surfers were able to compete in this year’s historic CE-ECSC.  Gambrel put up a purse of $5,000, creating the “Tautog’s/Doc Taylor’s Open Pro.”  This is a unique division as the athletes are not only surfing for a $5,000 purse but for a wildcard seed into the Vans Pro Men round of 96.  The Tautog’s/Doc Taylor’s Open Pro is limited to the first 64 surfers to enter and slots are filling up fast.

As the first event in the water, the Open Pro on Monday, Aug. 20 will kick off the 50th annual Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans.   The contest will be followed by an after-party at 8 p.m. for competitors and their friends or families at Tautog’s restaurant located on 23rd Street in Virginia Beach.  The media and related photographers are invited to attend this evening event.
