Tiny surf on offer today at Praia de Santa Barbara
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2012 : - - Small waves and strong sideshore winds forced event officials to call a second lay-day at the ASP 6-Star SATA Airlines Azores Pro. The new swell expected to build throughout the day didn’t show signs of its arrival and with a promising forecast for tomorrow, organizers have deciced to wait for the best possible conditions to finish the event.
ASP Europe’s Head Judge Iain Buchanan, who’s seen an unusual number of lay-days called this summer in the European leg of events, explains the reason behind this decision: “We’ve had our second call today at 3 o’clock and the conditions haven’t improved. With the forecast looking pretty good, a swell picking up with a good period coming from the North West tomorrow, so conditions looking pretty ideal, we’ve decided to hold-off the quarter-finals. We only have got seven heats to do from the last three days doing big days. We thought this might happen and it has, so we planned the event to finish on Sunday with the least possible heats to send the guys out in the best possible conditions to finish off.”
Eight competitors remain in contention for the SATA Airlines Azores Pro Title, and pressure starts building as massive points are on offer for the winner of this ASP 6-Star event. With only three more events in 2012 offering the most points towards qualification for the coveted ASP World Championship Tour, the winner here will take a valuable advantage over his opponents.
Tomorrow’s call has been set to 10am for a possible start of the quarter-finals. The ASP 6-Star SATA Airlines Azores Pro is scheduled from September 4-9, 2012 in Sao Miguel, Azores Islands. For all results, photos, video highlights, press releases log on to zarautz.aspeurope.com.
