First Birthday since Induction into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 September, 2012 : - - Legendary waterman, original Waikiki beach boy and Toes on the Nose team rider, Albert 'Rabbit' Kekai, will celebrate his 92nd birthday on November 11, 2012, his first as a Surfer’s Hall of Fame inductee. Kekai’s accomplishments over the past 91 years led to his recent induction into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach, Calif. on August 3, 2012. Kekai made his permanent mark in surfing history, pressing his hand and foot prints into the pavement on Main Street, Huntington Beach, as one of 16 to be a part of the elite group of athletes and surfers.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Kekai earned the nickname “Rabbit” because of his exceptional speed on the track. Although active in nearly every sport, including track, football and basketball, Kekai turned his attention to surfing at the age of 10 when he was taken under the wing of his mentor Duke Kahanamoku, who helped to perfect Rabbit’s surfing and outrigger canoeing skills.
Kekai has spent years traveling the world surfing as the world’s greatest ambassador for the sport of surfing. At the age of 91, Kekai has inspired new generations of surfers with his humble and generous personality, and has established himself as one of the greatest icons in the sport of surfing.
“We wish Rabbit happiness, health and good surf on his 92nd birthday,” said Richard Allred, Toes on the Nose president. “Rabbit is a surf god to Toes on the Nose and everyone who has encountered his legendary surfing throughout his many years and with his lifestyle, I think he will outlive us all.”
Kekai’s secret to longevity is simply attributed to a healthy and clean lifestyle -Rabbit has never smoked and doesn’t drink- claiming that staying young is simple, he says, “My heart doesn’t age, it’s still young.”
Rabbit will spend his 92nd birthday surrounded by friends and loved ones at his home in Southern California.
