Surf World Updates
The Amazing Collection of Carl Tanner and more
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 September, 2012 : - - A founding member of the museum, Carl Tanner has a collection of over 500 surfboards displayed at the museum and various other places on the coast. On a recent visit to Carl’s private collection, it was amazing to see the variety of boards and the unique shapes and designs in his collection. Carl began buying and selling surfboards at markets in 1980 and has now assembled one of the best collections in the world. His collection spans the evolution of designs from solid timber boards to the modern day thruster and includes many rare surf craft. Thank you Carl for your wonderful contribution to our museum.

UPCOMING EVENTS A Slide Night with John Witzig and Mike Perry: 6th October John Witzig has become an icon of Australian surfing. In a ‘career’ studded by controversy, he ha urfer, photographer, writer, editor and publisher. John has done it all. Surf World Gold Coast is proud to announce that John will host a slide night on 6 October where he will show a selection of his photos from the 60s and 70s, with commentary on that evolutionary era in surfing when board design was changing rapidly and surfers were exploring the virgin breaks that have now become mainstream destinations. John will be ably backed up by expat American, and world-renowned surf forecaster, Mike Perry.
Though well known by the surfing hierarchy, Mike and his contributions to surfing have generally remained under the radar. A self-proclaimed ‘cog in the wheel of surfing’, Mike maintains contact with many of the overlords and underdogs of the art. With all that, he remains an individual who has simply preserved his love of surfing since first introduced to it in 1959. Thanks to Paul Witzig, John’s brother, the night will end with the viewing of three short film clips from his groundbreaking movies, Hot Generatio ution and Sea of Joy. The third annual “Art of Surfing” competition and exhibition is this year being supported by Australia’s Surfing Life magazine (part of the Morrison Media group). Surf World is delighted to partner with this iconic surf mag in an event which features retro and contemporary art on surfboards of all shapes and sizes.
This year, for the first time, there will be a photographic category aimed at capturing images that reflect “surfing on the Gold Coast.” This promises to be a very exciting initiative and should generate a huge response! The exhibition will run for four months with the official launch and announcement of winners to be made during a gala function at Surf World on 3 November 2012. Go to our website or phone (07) 5525 6380 for an entry form. Art of Surfing Opening Night: 3rd November
