Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 September, 2012 : - - The Hurley Pro at Trestles is off today due to the small two foot waves on offer. The event saw amazing performances through Rounds 1 and 2 and a new swell is expected to deliver in the coming days. When competition resumes, up first will be Kelly Slater up against Matt Wilkinson in the opening heat of Round 3.
Competition kicked off Sunday in two-to-four foot waves in a sensational day of surfing as the Top 34 completed the opening round of competition. Kelly Slater reigning 11-time ASP World Champion and defending five-time Hurley Pro at Trestles winner, built momentum throughout his opening heat to advance directly to Round 3.
Mick Fanning two-time ASP World Champion and ASP WCT frontrunner, unloaded his renowned forehand attack on the long righthanders of Lower Trestles to secure a Round 1 win. While he has been in deadly form this season, he admitted the battle for the No. 1 position is only just heating up with several surfers in this draw (ranging from veterans to rookies) will be tough to contend with at Lowers.
The Hurley Pro returned Monday and bore witness to phenomenal surfing and heated Round 2 battles in clean three-to-four foot conditions. Adam Melling looked at home on the long rights of Lowers and unloaded the highest single-wave score of Hurley Pro at Trestles competition, a 9.70 for a ferocious combination of forehand carves ousting Damien Hobgood.
Jeremy Flores got the best of an incredible battle against local Patrick Gudauskas. Gudauskas launched massive airs but it was Flores who strung together powerful carving combinations to take out a close Round 2 win.
John John Florence another World Title contender to battle in Round 2, took on fellow teen phenom and event wildcard Evan Geiselman, in a series of exciting exchanges. Florence got the best of the Floridian talent, compliments of a long righthander and a lofty backhand air-reverse on a left to secure his position in Round 3.
Surfline, official forecasters for the Hurley Pro at Trestles, are calling for: Solid south swell to build in and be strongest Wed/Thur, with a building trend in the afternoon tomorrow and an easing trend Friday. Fun size SW swell is on track for the weekend. Conditions through Friday will be favorable with light morning wind and light to moderate onshore flow in the afternoons.
