Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 September, 2012 : - - The Special Olympics of Duval County dominated the water in Cocoa Beach, FL on Saturday, September 15th at the Ron Jon Special Olympics State Surfing Championships. Smiles were contagious on the beach this day with a great turn out of athletes and huge support group out there. Seven counties from all over the state of Florida made it out to Sheppard Park to compete in the Ron Jon Special Olympics State Surfing Championships. The athletes really stepped it up this year, their competitive drives really made the sport that more official. There was a great representation of the Duval County area with 15 athletes competing and winning the gold, silver, and bronze medals in many divisions!

“I was struck by two strong thoughts. First, the athletes, their intensity, focus and stoke is unmatched in any sport I have personally witnessed. Second, the sincere, heartfelt passion that was shown by the coaches and instructors. You guys are truly an inspiration,” reflects FSA Director, Paul West. The eight week training program has clearly paid off as the sport of surfing continues to change lives.
