The contest forms part of the 5th edition of the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival which is scheduled to take place at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg over the same weekend. The highlight of the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival will be the official Guinness World Record attempt for the Most Surfers on a single wave.
Sanctioned by Surfing South Africa and supported by funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the Surf Emporium Western Province Interschool’s Championship and Battle of the Wave Surf Session looks set to start the spring school holidays in style.
With amazing prizes such as a computer for the winning Tag Team's School, surf hampers, a custom surfboard as well as a two hour professional surfing photo shoot with world renowned surf photographer AVG on offer, over 20 schools and more than 80 young surfers are expected to participate.

Waves for Change waves-for-change.org is a long-term intervention project for at-risk ocean side communities. The aim of the initiative is to empower participants to become leading advocates and role models to their peers and to effect a profound change in the way young adults perceive HIV, the stigma attached to the disease and clarify the issue of safe sex. Through its coach training, Waves for Change aims to train a new generation of community leaders to address social issues endemic to South African township life.
Umthombo Street Children umthombo.org is an organisation that empowers street children and offers them alternatives to street life. Its overall aim is to change the way that society perceives and treats street children in South Africa. Umthombo’s surf programme is an engagement programme designed to initiate the transition of street children out of street life.
A significant segment of the contest is the Battle of the Wave which is open to all under surfers in the Under 18 age group. This contest is intended to raise awareness of the valuable work being carried out by Cape Town’s unique Shark Spotters Programme aimed at finding the middle ground between white shark conservation and concerns of the public. About twenty Shark Spotters are employed to work at nine of Cape Town’s most popular beaches and the R50 Battle of the Wave Surf Session entry fee will be donated to this programme.
