Perfect little waves and constructive feedback highlight BL's Blast Off event
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 September, 2012 : - - Perfect little waves greeted the 340-plus competitors who turned up to Whale Beach today for BL's Blast Off presented by Hurley. The event, now in its seventh year, saw both boys and girls surf tackle fun and friendly two-foot surf. Narrabeen’s Kobi Clements was one of the morning’s stand out surfers throwing down a flurry of grab-rail cutbacks and backhand snaps. Judges stated: “Epic low stance and style, great use of rail surfing and commitment on the bigger sets.”
Unlike many straight knock out events, BL's Blast Off focuses on coaching the surfers with judges offering constructive feedback after the heat. Former World Champion surfer and Contest Director Barton Lynch said: “There are two main questions judges will be asking themselves – How can they help this kid improve their surfing and how are they going in the heat? The judges will discuss the coaching elements of the performance and come to an agreement on comments that are to be written down on the tally sheet.”
Victorian surfer Patrick Hughes (Jan Juc), showed commitment with a few late takeoffs and a great display of “down-the-line-speed.” Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads) and Holly Wawn (Newport), both took out their heats with judges noting that both girls showed great style and an excellent display of backhand surfing. Rasmus King (Byron Bay) notched up some great scores with judges noting his wave choice and commitment to big maneuvers.
Prizes were given away all day with Tahlia Raper from Narrabeen winning a new surfboard for her first time efforts in the Learn To Surf competition. Barton Lynch and former two-time World Champ Tom Carroll awarded her with her prize. The four day event runs across five divisions for boys and girls: under-14’s, 12’s 10's, 8's and 6's with parental assistance being permitted in the 8's and 6's.
